A recent poll by Silver & Black Pride and a segment of the fan base showed support for Mendoza sitting out until December. However, despite the range of opinions, the decision seems straightforward when considering the schedule. The organization’s current objectives also contribute to this decision. Kubiak and Spytek have consistently stated throughout the offseason that they do not want a rookie quarterback starting in September. This is sometimes the case in the NFL.
This approach is reflected in the signing of Kirk Cousins to a fully guaranteed, one-year, $11.3 million contract. This contract signals an expectation for him to start. When asked about the quarterback depth chart at OTAs, Kubiak responded, “It’s going to reveal itself.” This indicates a clear but indirect message regarding the team’s plans for this nfl season.
The Raiders begin the season at home against Miami. This is followed by games at the Chargers, at New Orleans, and then hosting Kansas City in Week 4. This schedule presents significant challenges for a 22-year-old quarterback with no experience in the nfl. From Weeks 4 through 11, the team faces six playoff opponents from last season. The schedule also includes four road games in November. Introducing Mendoza during this period would not be advisable from a football standpoint.
A more likely scenario is that Cousins leads the team through the bye week in Week 13. Additionally, by the time Mendoza enters, the nfl narrative for the season could have changed dramatically. The Jets visit Allegiant Stadium in Week 8, and with New York’s recently revamped defense, this could provide a suitable opportunity for Mendoza’s debut.
