WASHINGTON, D.C. — Justin Gaethje has finally reached the mountaintop. After years of thrilling fights, heartbreaking setbacks, and unforgettable performances, Gaethje realized his lifelong dream Sunday night by capturing the undisputed UFC lightweight championship with a gritty and courageous victory over Ilia Topuria in the main event of UFC Freedom 250 at the White House.
In a fight that showcased everything fans have come to expect from “The Highlight,” Gaethje weathered serious adversity before overwhelming the previously unbeaten champion and forcing a fourth-round stoppage when Topuria could no longer continue.
From the opening bell, Gaethje looked sharp and aggressive. The interim champion landed the heavier shots throughout the first round, using his trademark pressure and power to keep Topuria from getting comfortable.
While Topuria found moments of success, it was Gaethje who appeared to be dictating the pace early. The opening frame set the tone for what would become a brutal championship battle.
Topuria Nearly Ends It
The momentum shifted dramatically in the second round. Topuria showed exactly why he entered the fight undefeated and regarded as one of the most dangerous fighters in the sport.
The Georgian star repeatedly attacked Gaethje’s body with devastating shots that visibly hurt the challenger. At several points, it appeared Topuria was on the verge of finishing the fight.
After staggering Gaethje, Topuria followed him to the canvas and aggressively pursued multiple submission attempts. For many fighters, that sequence would have been the beginning of the end. Not for Justin Gaethje.
Somehow, Gaethje survived. Not only did he survive, but he began taking over. Starting late in the second round and continuing into the third, Gaethje’s relentless pressure and punishing striking slowly began to wear Topuria down.
Every exchange became more damaging. Every punch seemed to leave a mark. The champion’s face began swelling significantly as Gaethje continued landing heavy shots. What started as a competitive title fight transformed into a display of endurance, heart, and championship determination.
Topuria’s Corner Forced to Stop the Fight
By the end of the third round, the damage had become impossible to ignore. Topuria’s face was badly swollen and bloodied after absorbing a sustained assault from the new champion.
A cageside physician examined Topuria before the fourth round and initially cleared him to continue. But after another difficult frame and a return to his corner, the fight was stopped.
Topuria was unable to answer the bell for the next round, giving Gaethje the victory and the undisputed lightweight championship. The loss marks the first defeat of Topuria’s professional career. Entering UFC Freedom 250, Topuria had looked nearly untouchable while establishing himself as one of the UFC’s biggest stars.
For two rounds, he showed flashes of that brilliance. But against Gaethje, toughness alone wasn’t enough. The punishment accumulated, the momentum shifted, and eventually the fight slipped away.
Dream Finally Realized
For Gaethje, the victory represented the culmination of a career spent entertaining fans and embracing the toughest challenges available. The former interim champion had come agonizingly close to UFC gold before, only to fall short against elite competition.
This time was different. This time he finished the job. In one of the most memorable performances of his career, Gaethje overcame serious adversity and defeated one of the sport’s most feared champions.
