Jackson Arnold knows what it’s like to carry sky-high expectations. Once considered one of the nation’s elite high school quarterbacks, Arnold entered college football as a five-star recruit with dreams of becoming one of the sport’s next superstars. Instead, his first two stops at Oklahoma and Auburn were filled with coaching changes, injuries around him, inconsistent play, and circumstances that often seemed beyond his control.
Now, the former blue-chip prospect is hoping the third stop will finally be the right one.
Arnold arrived at UNLV in January looking to revive his career under head coach Dan Mullen and offensive coordinator Corey Dennis as the Rebels prepare for what could be a championship-caliber season in the Mountain West.
A Familiar Face in Las Vegas
One of the biggest reasons Arnold chose UNLV was the opportunity to reunite with Dennis. Their relationship dates back to Arnold’s high school days at Guyer High School near Dallas, Texas. Dennis, then an assistant coach at Ohio State, watched Arnold throw for more than 300 yards and two touchdowns against powerhouse Allen High School in 2021.
Ohio State quickly offered Arnold a scholarship, but he ultimately chose Oklahoma. Dennis never forgot him. “You can get mad at a kid for making the decision that they think is best for themselves, or you can wish a kid the best and not burn any bridges,” Dennis recalled.
“The joke was, ‘Hey man, it might be at the Dallas Cowboys in the next 10 years, but who knows, I’m gonna find a way to coach you.'” Years later, that promise became reality.
One More Chance
Arnold’s journey has taken him from Texas high school superstar to Oklahoma, Auburn and now Las Vegas. At just 22 years old, he’s already experienced more adversity than many quarterbacks encounter during an entire career.
For Dennis, the talent never disappeared. “I think the kid was a scapegoat for two regimes,” Dennis said. “I don’t understand how a kid could be one of the best high school players in the country and then all of a sudden people think he just stinks. That makes no sense.”
Arnold will have an opportunity to write a new chapter on Sept. 12 when UNLV travels to Denton, Texas, to face North Texas just minutes from where his football journey first took off.
It won’t erase everything that’s happened over the past several years. But for Jackson Arnold, it represents exactly what he’s been searching for a fresh start.
UNLV Felt Different
This time, Arnold wanted stability more than anything. Rather than chasing the biggest name or highest profile program, he chose the people he trusted.
“I feel like I needed to be around people that I trusted,” Arnold said. “Coach Mullen’s offense is a little more pro style than I’ve been in, and I feel like for the next level an offense like that would help develop me more.”
Mullen’s reputation for developing quarterbacks also played a major role in Arnold’s decision. The Rebels needed only one quarterback visit. Arnold only needed one visit as well.
Learning to Trust Himself Again
Perhaps the biggest adjustment isn’t mechanical it’s mental. At previous stops, Arnold often relied on his athleticism when plays broke down. At UNLV, Mullen wants him to become a more polished pocket passer.
“It was funny,” Arnold said. “Coach Mullen wants me to actually stop scrambling to run. He wants me to start throwing up 50/50 balls in practice… things I probably wouldn’t throw in games.”
The goal isn’t recklessness. It’s rebuilding Arnold’s confidence as a passer while helping him trust what he sees from the pocket.
“We’ll do some quarterback run stuff naturally that’s part of my game,” Arnold said. “But I think his emphasis for me is developing as a passer and really reading progressions in the pocket.”
