LAS VEGAS — Conor McGregor didn’t wait long to address the heartbreaking end to his long-awaited UFC return. Less than two hours after suffering a fight-ending knee injury just 69 seconds into his UFC 329 main event against Max Holloway, McGregor took to social media to reveal both his emotional state and what he knows about the injury. The message painted a grim picture.
Writing on X shortly after leaving T-Mobile Arena, McGregor expressed disbelief over what had happened.
“My head gasket is gone. Destroyed,” McGregor wrote. “I had no injury/injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.”
The statement came after the former two-division UFC champion’s comeback ended almost as soon as it began.
Injury Strikes Seconds Into Return
After nearly five years away from the Octagon, McGregor entered UFC 329 looking to reignite his legendary career against former featherweight champion Max Holloway.
Instead, disaster struck less than 70 seconds into the opening round. McGregor attempted a jumping kick early in the fight before his knee appeared to buckle upon landing.
He fell to the canvas multiple times without being struck, grimacing in obvious pain before referee Mike Beltran stopped the contest. Holloway was awarded the victory via injury stoppage.
Torn ACL Suspected
Although the UFC has not officially confirmed the diagnosis, UFC CEO Dana White revealed during the post-fight press conference that promotion physicians believe McGregor may have suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
The Irish superstar was later seen leaving T-Mobile Arena still wearing his fight shorts and hand wraps while limping toward transportation for further medical evaluation. Additional testing is expected to determine the full extent of the damage.
Another Cruel Setback
The injury adds another painful chapter to McGregor’s comeback story. His return at UFC 329 marked his first appearance since July 2021, when he suffered a gruesome broken leg during his trilogy fight against Dustin Poirier.
After years of rehabilitation, legal battles, and questions about whether he would ever compete again, McGregor finally made his return—only to see another major injury halt his comeback almost immediately.
What’s Next?
Until imaging results are completed, McGregor’s timetable for recovery remains uncertain. If the suspected ACL tear is confirmed, another lengthy rehabilitation process could await the former champion.
For now, one of the biggest nights in UFC history will be remembered not for a spectacular comeback. But for another heartbreaking injury to one of the sport’s most iconic figures.
As McGregor himself summed it up: “I can only describe it as hell.”
