WASHINGTON, D.C. — Mauricio Ruffy came to make a statement at UFC Freedom 250. The surging lightweight contender didn’t just make one he made two. First, Ruffy dismantled former Bellator champion Michael Chandler in brutal fashion on the South Lawn of the White House.
Then, moments later, he got down on one knee and proposed to his longtime girlfriend in front of a worldwide audience. It was a night Ruffy will never forget. From the opening bell, Ruffy looked like the faster, sharper, and more dangerous fighter. The Brazilian repeatedly tagged Chandler with clean punches, forcing the veteran into survival mode almost immediately.
Nearly every significant strike appeared to stun Chandler, who struggled to find answers against Ruffy’s speed and precision. As the punishment continued to mount, Ruffy mixed in his trademark spinning attacks, repeatedly threatening with his signature wheel kick.
Eventually, one landed. The kick blasted Chandler backward into the fence and left him vulnerable.
Brutal Finish Ends the Fight
Sensing the finish, Ruffy wasted no time. As Chandler attempted to move forward, Ruffy unleashed a vicious combination of punches that dropped the former title challenger to the canvas.
The referee quickly stepped in at 4:29 of the opening round, ending the contest before Chandler could absorb any additional punishment. The victory improved Ruffy’s professional record to 14-2 and marked his second consecutive win since suffering a setback against Benoit Saint Denis.
Chandler’s Tough Stretch Continues
For Michael Chandler, the loss adds another chapter to what has become a difficult run inside the UFC. The former Bellator lightweight champion entered the bout hoping to regain momentum and reinsert himself into the title picture.
Instead, he suffered his fourth consecutive defeat. Chandler has now lost six of his last seven fights and falls to 23-11 as a professional. Despite the setbacks, Chandler remains one of the sport’s most respected veterans and fan favorites due to his willingness to face elite competition.
A Career-Defining Moment
The victory alone would have been enough to make headlines. But Ruffy wasn’t finished. After the fight, while still standing inside the Octagon, he turned his attention away from competition and toward family.
In one of the night’s most memorable moments, Ruffy proposed to his girlfriend. She quickly accepted. The crowd erupted as the newly engaged couple celebrated inside the cage following one of the biggest wins of Ruffy’s career.
