Tyrin Jones has been playing out of his mind in his freshman season with the Rebels. Completely controlling the defensive end with non-stop highlight steals and blocks. Without Jones the Rebels would be missing a huge piece that is looking harder and harder to fill.
Tyrin Jones is “HIM”
Currently, he leads the Mountain West in total blocks with 56 in 28 games. He is also averaging 2.0 steals per game, so opponents have to stay sharp anytime he is around the rim or in the passing lanes. His season high came Nov. 20 against Saint Joseph’s, when he swatted six shots in the win.
However, he is not only dominant defensively. He is averaging 11.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists while shooting 60 percent from the field, and he has adjusted to the college game faster than most freshmen.
He has flashed real scoring touch, too. He has five games with 15 or more points and three games with 20 or more, all while shooting better than 50 percent.
Jones has been so efficient he has logged two perfect shooting games this season. On Dec. 20, he went 7-for-7 and scored 18 points. Then on Feb. 21, he went 5-for-5 and finished with 12 points. Only nine other players have posted a perfect shooting game this season, and Jones is the only one with two.
Fans and coaches knew the moment he stepped on the floor for the Rebels that he was different. Now UNLV believes Jones and Dra Gibb-Lawhorn can help lead a Mountain West tournament run and more.
