The spotlight is already shining on Fernando Mendoza. As the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, every throw, every decision, and every step of his development is being closely watched by the Las Vegas Raiders and their fan base.
While the true pressure won’t arrive until training camp opens in late July, Mendoza is already embracing the challenge of learning the NFL game and preparing for what he hopes will eventually become a franchise quarterback role. For now, the rookie signal-caller is focused on one thing: getting better every day.
Through organized team activities and minicamp, Mendoza says he has already made significant progress. The former Indiana star has spent the offseason absorbing information from the Raiders coaching staff while adjusting to the speed and complexity of the professional game.
“I’m really working hard with the coaching staff, who’s pushing me and have done a phenomenal job of relaying and communicating the information needed,” Mendoza said.
“It’s up to me to take full advantage of that, and I feel like I’ve been growing every day.” The rookie added that he feels “leaps and bounds ahead” of where he was when offseason workouts first began.
Klint Kubiak Challenging His Rookie Quarterback
Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak isn’t easing Mendoza into the NFL. While veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins is expected to open the season as the starter, the coaching staff is putting plenty on the rookie’s plate.
Kubiak has challenged Mendoza to master multiple offensive concepts and operate from a variety of alignments. “We’re going to ask him to play under center, we’re going to ask him to play in the gun, we’re going to ask him to play in the pistol,” Kubiak said.
“The things we’ve asked him to improve on, he’s been diligent at.” The Raiders coaching staff believes that demanding versatility now will pay dividends later as Mendoza continues his development.
Learning From Past Experiences
Fortunately for Mendoza, this isn’t the first time he’s faced a steep learning curve. After transferring from California to Indiana during his college career, Mendoza experienced a difficult spring while adapting to a new system and environment.
The struggles ultimately proved valuable. By the end of the season, Mendoza captured the Heisman Trophy and led Indiana to its first national championship.
That experience has helped him maintain perspective during his transition to the NFL. “I’m growing,” Mendoza said. “This isn’t the Super Bowl today.”
Patience Is the Plan
The Raiders appear committed to taking a measured approach with Mendoza’s development. Unlike some rookie quarterbacks thrust into starting roles immediately, Mendoza has the benefit of learning behind an experienced veteran while continuing to refine his game.
The organization hopes that patience will ultimately produce long-term success. Still, the scrutiny that comes with being the No. 1 overall pick won’t disappear. Every rep during training camp will be analyzed, every preseason appearance will be dissected. Every sign of progress will generate excitement about the future.
For now, though, Mendoza is focused on the process. The spotlight is getting brighter. The Raiders believe their future quarterback is handling it exactly the way he should.
