The Las Vegas Raiders made a major investment in their defense this offseason, and despite some early concerns during mandatory minicamp, the organization appears confident that linebacker Nakobe Dean will be ready when it matters most.
Dean, who signed a three-year, $36 million contract with Las Vegas in March, missed the first session of mandatory minicamp, prompting questions about his health and availability. However, both coaches and team insiders have quickly worked to calm speculation surrounding the veteran linebacker. With training camp just weeks away, the Raiders remain focused on ensuring one of their most important defensive additions is fully prepared for the season ahead.
Dean was one of the centerpiece acquisitions of the Raiders’ offseason overhaul on defense. The former standout linebacker arrived in Las Vegas on a contract that includes $20 million fully guaranteed and is expected to play a major leadership role alongside fellow newcomer Quay Walker.
After defensive inconsistencies plagued the Raiders last season, the front office prioritized upgrading the second level of the defense with proven talent and athleticism. Dean fits that vision perfectly. When healthy, he has shown the ability to impact games as a tackler, run defender, and communicator in the middle of a defense.
Kubiak Stays Tight-Lipped
Naturally, Dean’s absence from the opening minicamp session generated concern among fans and media. When asked directly whether the absence was injury-related, Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak declined to offer specifics. Instead, he emphasized the team’s broader objective of keeping players healthy throughout the summer. “Nakobe’s been here every day in practice,” Kubiak said.
“But all injuries and things like that, I don’t want to talk about at this time of year. We just want to get all of our guys healthy for training camp. That’s really the most important thing.”
Kubiak’s comments reflected a cautious approach often seen during offseason programs when organizations prioritize long-term availability over short-term participation.
While speculation naturally followed Dean’s absence, assistant head coach Mike McCoy offered a reassuring update. According to McCoy, Dean has remained actively involved with the team and participated in official offseason activities, including media obligations.
The message from inside the building has been consistent: there is no panic. Rather than rushing players through offseason workouts, the Raiders appear committed to a measured approach designed to have key contributors available once training camp begins in late July.
Health Will Be Critical
While the Raiders are projecting confidence, Dean’s durability will remain a storyline worth monitoring. Injuries limited him to just eight starts last season, preventing him from building upon a breakout 2024 campaign in which he recorded 128 tackles across 15 starts.
That production demonstrated exactly why Las Vegas targeted him during free agency. At his best, Dean brings speed, instincts, and physicality that can dramatically improve a defense. The challenge now is ensuring he stays healthy enough to deliver that impact over a full season.
