A world title clash between two of boxing’s biggest personalities is officially set. Rolando “Rolly” Romero will make the first defense of his WBA welterweight championship against former two-division world champion Teofimo Lopez on August 22 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. According to multiple reports confirmed by ESPN. The championship bout will be available on Prime Video Pay-Per-View and DAZN Pay-Per-View.

Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) returns to the ring for the first time since pulling off one of boxing’s biggest upsets by defeating Ryan Garcia for the WBA welterweight title in Times Square last May. Originally crowned the WBA’s regular champion, Romero was elevated to full world champion after Jaron “Boots” Ennis vacated the title to campaign at junior middleweight.

Since the victory over Garcia, Romero has been linked to several high-profile opponents, including Devin Haney and Manny Pacquiao, but none of those matchups materialized. Now, the outspoken Las Vegas native will finally make his first title defense against one of the sport’s most accomplished champions.

Lopez Chases History

For Teofimo Lopez, the fight represents an opportunity to become a three-division world champion. Lopez (22-2, 13 KOs) previously held the unified lightweight championship before capturing the WBO junior welterweight title. Now, the Brooklyn native moves up to the welterweight division looking to add another world championship to his résumé.

The 28-year-old is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Shakur Stevenson in January. A defeat that cost him both The Ring and WBO junior welterweight titles. Prior to that setback, Lopez was widely regarded as one of boxing’s elite pound-for-pound talents.

The matchup presents plenty of intrigue. Romero enters with momentum after the biggest victory of his career. While Lopez looks to prove that his move to welterweight can revive his championship aspirations.

A victory for Romero would solidify his place among the top names in the division, while Lopez has the opportunity to become a champion in a third weight class and immediately establish himself as a major player at 147 pounds.

With both fighters known for their confidence, knockout power, and willingness to engage in verbal warfare outside the ring, fans can expect plenty of fireworks leading up to fight night.

Las Vegas Hosts Another Major Boxing Event

The championship showdown takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. One of boxing’s premier venues, and will be distributed worldwide via Prime Video PPV and DAZN PPV.

With a world title on the line and two of boxing’s biggest personalities sharing the ring. Romero vs. Lopez has all the ingredients to become one of the biggest fights of the summer.
