NEW YORK — Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza completed his stunning rise from lightly recruited prospect to national superstar on Saturday night, winning the Heisman Trophy after leading the Hoosiers to their first-ever No. 1 ranking and the top seed in the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff.

Mendoza, who threw for 2,980 yards and an NCAA-best 33 touchdown passes, outpaced Vanderbilt sensation Diego Pavia, Ohio State freshman standout Julian Sayin, and Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love in the final voting. He becomes Indiana’s first Heisman winner in program history.

The Hoosiers now turn their attention to the College Football Playoff, where they will open with a first-round bye.

A Quarterback Who Transformed a Program

Mendoza’s journey is as unlikely as it is remarkable. Once overlooked on the recruiting trail, the Miami native transferred from Cal and transformed Indiana’s offense into one of the nation’s most explosive units. His precision, efficiency, and big-play production elevated the Hoosiers to heights unseen in Bloomington.

Quarterbacks have now won the Heisman in four of the past five seasons, with Colorado’s Travis Hunter the two-way phenom standing as the lone exception.

The Competition: Pavia, Sayin, and Love Shine, But Mendoza Shines Brighter

The Heisman field featured standout performances across the board:

  • Diego Pavia (Vanderbilt): Set several school records and engineered one of the program’s best seasons in decades.

  • Julian Sayin (Ohio State): Led the defending national champions back to the top of the Big Ten.

  • Jeremiyah Love (Notre Dame): A Doak Walker Award winner after a dominant year at running back.

But none matched Mendoza’s blend of efficiency, leadership, and game-changing performances atop the nation’s No. 1 team.

Awards Season Sweep

Saturday’s ceremony punctuated a week of accolades for Mendoza, who had already been named:

  • AP Player of the Year

  • Maxwell Award winner

  • Davey O’Brien Award winner

Notre Dame’s Love took home the Doak Walker Award, while other finalists also collected postseason honors.

Making Indiana Football History

Mendoza is the second Heisman finalist in Indiana history, joining 1989 runner-up Anthony Thompson. He’s also now the seventh Hoosier to finish in the top 10 of Heisman voting.

Remarkably, Indiana now boasts back-to-back top-10 finishers, after quarterback Kurtis Rourke placed ninth last year a milestone the program had never reached until this season.
