EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Spain is back on top of the soccer world. A dramatic extra-time goal from Ferran Torres lifted Spain to a 1-0 victory over defending champion Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, securing the nation’s second World Cup title and its first since its historic triumph in South Africa in 2010.
The tightly contested championship was decided in the 106th minute when Barcelona forward Ferran Torres, who entered as a second-half substitute, finished from close range after Nico Williams headed Pedro Porro’s cross into the center of the penalty area.
The goal proved to be the difference in a match dominated by Spain from start to finish.
Torres Delivers Championship Moment
After replacing Mikel Oyarzabal in the 62nd minute, Torres made the most important contribution of the tournament. With Argentina stretched in extra time, Pedro Porro delivered a dangerous cross that Nico Williams redirected across the goalmouth before Torres calmly buried the finish to send the Spanish supporters into celebration. It was the crowning moment of a dominant World Cup campaign for Luis de la Fuente’s side.
Argentina’s hopes suffered a major blow just before extra time when midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off in the 90th minute. Already carrying a yellow card, Fernández lunged recklessly into teenage defender Pau Cubarsí, leaving referee Slavko Vinčić with little choice but to issue a second yellow card followed by a red.
Forced to play the remainder of the match with 10 men, the defending champions struggled to contain Spain’s relentless pressure.
Without goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, the final likely would have been decided much earlier. The Aston Villa goalkeeper delivered a remarkable performance, recording 11 saves, the most ever by a goalkeeper in a FIFA World Cup Final.
Time after time, Martínez denied Spain’s attack. Frustrating Williams, Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo, and company before finally being beaten in extra time.
Spain’s Defense Makes History
While Spain’s attack ultimately delivered the championship, its defense defined the tournament. Spain conceded just one goal throughout the entire World Cup. The fewest ever allowed by a tournament champion despite navigating an expanded 48-team competition that required eight matches to lift the trophy.
Argentina failed to register its first shot on target until the closing stages, with Lionel Messi’s attempt blocked in the 117th minute.
Messi’s Historic Final
At 39 years old, Lionel Messi continued adding to his remarkable legacy. The Argentine captain became the first player in history to start three FIFA World Cup Finals and the oldest outfield player ever to start the championship match.
Messi concluded the tournament with eight goals, finishing just behind France’s Kylian Mbappé in the race for the Golden Boot. If this proves to be the final World Cup appearance of the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner. He leaves the tournament with 21 career World Cup goals, one shy of Mbappé’s all-time record.
Spain Extends Historic Unbeaten Run
With the victory, Spain stretched its unbeaten streak to 38 consecutive matches across all competitions (29 wins, 9 draws). Surpassing Italy’s previous men’s international record of 37 matches set between 2018 and 2021.
Spain also became just the third reigning European champion to follow its UEFA European Championship triumph with a FIFA World Cup title, joining West Germany (1972–74) and Spain’s own legendary 2008–10 generation.
World Champions Once Again
Sixteen years after lifting its first World Cup in South Africa, Spain has reclaimed its place atop world football. Powered by an elite defense, relentless possession, and a new generation of stars led by Ferran Torres, Nico Williams, Lamine Yamal, and Pau Cubarsí, La Roja delivered one of the most dominant World Cup performances in tournament history. The golden era of Spanish football has officially returned.
