UNLV QB Alex Orji Out for the Season With Hamstring Injury

The UNLV Rebels will be without one of their most intriguing offensive weapons for the remainder of the 2025 season. Head coach Dan Mullen announced this week that quarterback Alex Orji will miss the rest of the year after suffering a hamstring injury that requires surgery.

Orji’s Role Cut Short

Orji transferred from Michigan this past offseason with hopes of bringing a dynamic dual-threat element to Mullen’s system. Used primarily in special packages, he flashed both his running and passing abilities:

  • Rushing: 10 carries for 42 yards, 1 touchdown

  • Passing: 3-for-3, 37 yards

While not the starter, Orji gave the Rebels a versatile option that forced defenses to prepare for multiple looks.

Colandrea in Control

The Rebels remain in the hands of Anthony Colandrea, who has been impressive through the first three games. The sophomore has completed more than 75% of his passes (49-of-65) for 647 yards, six touchdowns, and only one interception. His accuracy and poise have given UNLV early offensive stability in Mullen’s debut season.

Veteran quarterback Cameron Friel now moves into the backup role. Friel has thrown for more than 2,000 career yards, including 1,600+ yards during his freshman year in 2021, and provides much-needed depth behind Colandrea.

What’s Next for Orji?

For Orji, the setback comes in what was supposed to be his senior season. Having appeared in only three games, he is eligible to apply for a medical redshirt, which could preserve an additional year of eligibility.

In today’s college football landscape shaped by the transfer portal and NIL opportunities  Orji’s future with the program is uncertain. Whether he returns to UNLV in 2026 or pursues opportunities elsewhere will be a storyline to watch.
