UNLV Stuns UCLA for First Big Ten Win in 22 Years

UNLV football made history Saturday night, holding off a furious UCLA rally to earn a 30-23 home win at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, NV. Notching the program’s first victory over a Big Ten opponent since 2003.

Behind quarterback Anthony Colandrea’s 203 passing yards and three touchdowns, the Rebels (3-0) built a commanding first-half lead and showed resilience late to preserve their unbeaten start under new head coach Dan Mullen.

Fast Start for the Rebels

UNLV stormed out to a 23-0 advantage with less than two minutes left in the first half, dominating both sides of the ball. Colandrea was efficient, completing 15 of 21 passes and adding 59 rushing yards.

The defense smothered the Bruins early, limiting them to just 110 total yards through nearly two quarters. UCLA finally broke through with a short field goal before halftime, cutting the deficit to 23-3.

Bruins Battle Back

The second half told a different story. UCLA quarterback Nico Iamaleava (29-of-41, 255 yards, one touchdown, one interception) helped chip away at the deficit, and the Bruins outscored UNLV 20-7 after halftime.

With just over two minutes remaining, UCLA had the ball trailing by a touchdown. But UNLV’s defense delivered the final blow. Linebacker Marsel McDuffie tipped a pass that nickelback Aarmaris Brown intercepted with 52 seconds left, sealing the victory.

Teams Trending Differently

  • UNLV (3-0): The Rebels’ playoff dream is alive. After nearly reaching a New Year’s Six bowl last season, UNLV is positioning itself as an early frontrunner behind USF for the Group of Five’s College Football Playoff berth.

  • UCLA (0-2): After being outscored 66-13 across the first six quarters of the season (vs. Utah and UNLV), the Bruins showed some fight late. Winnable games against New Mexico and Northwestern are up next.

This win not only strengthens UNLV’s postseason case but also signals a new era of confidence under Mullen. For the first time in two decades, the Rebels have taken down a Big Ten foe and they may just be getting started.

UNLV visits Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 20 to wrap up nonconference play.
