Golden Knights Snap Oilers’ 16-Game Win Streak

The Vegas Golden Knights played spoilers on Tuesday night, snapping the Edmonton Oilers’ potential record-breaking 16-game win streak.

Chandler Stephenson netted the go-ahead goal 1:24 into the third period. William Karlsson sealed the deal with an empty-netter. And Adin Hill was phenomenal with another 30-save performance — his eighth of the season.

Nicolas Roy was the other goal-scorer — his 10th of the season.

The Knights beat the Oilers 3-1 and improved their record to 30-15-6 — including 19-5-2 on home ice.

For the Oilers, it was their first loss since Dec. 19. They had won 24 of their previous 27 games, and were on a 16-game winning streak. They were one win away from tying the all-time record for most wins in a row, but Vegas had other plans.

“I know that they’re hot over there and they had won however many in a row, but I was more focused on just playing our game tonight and trying to get two points,” Hill said, according to ESPN. “It’s a big rivalry and for us to do it with a couple guys that were missing in our lineup is huge.”

The record has stood for more than 30 years, dating back to the 1992-93 season. That’s the season the Pittsburgh Penguins won 17 consecutive games, including points in each of their final 18 games.

The Columbus Blue Jackets were the last team to win 16 games in a row — doing so in the 2016-17 season.

The franchise record for the Golden Knights is 10 wins, which they accomplished during the 2020-21 season.

With their win against Edmonton on Tuesday, Vegas now has 66 points on the season. They remain in second place in the Pacific Division — seven points ahead of the Oilers — with 31 games left.

They started the season 11-0-1, but went just 13-14-4 over the next 31 games. They’ve now won seven of their past nine games, and are starting to look like the defending Champions again.

Their next game is on the road against the Arizona Coyotes on Feb. 8. They return to T-Mobile Arena on Feb. 12 for their Lunar New Year Knight.
