WNBA Nightcap: Aces fight losing streak, Fire down Fever, Sun survive

losing streak coverage leads Sunday as the Aces head to Golden State. Portland beat Indiana 100-84, Toronto rolled Seattle 93-72, and Connecticut survived 84-81. Up next: Aces at Valkyries, 12:30 p.m. PT on NBC and Peacock.

The Aces will try to end a two-game losing streak Sunday. They face the Golden State Valkyries in the day’s only game. Las Vegas will also see a familiar face in Kiah Stokes, a former teammate who helped the Aces win championships. Saturday’s slate still shook the standings. Portland made an expansion statement. Toronto cruised again. Connecticut escaped late.

Portland’s loudest message yet

Portland beat Indiana 100-84 at the Moda Center. The Fire set the tone early. They scored 29 in the first quarter. They piled on with 37 in the third.

 

Megan Gustafson scored 22 points for Portland. She went 8-for-8 from the field. The former Aces center helped Las Vegas win the WNBA title last season. Carla Leite posted 18 points and 12 assists. Emily Engstler added 16 points and 10 rebounds. Portland improved to 6-4.

Indiana got 18 from Aliyah Boston. Kelsey Mitchell scored 17. Caitlin Clark had 6 points on 1-for-7 shooting. Indiana also went 5-for-22 from 3.

Toronto hit the gas, Seattle never caught up

Toronto handled Seattle 93-72 at home. The Tempo broke it open after halftime. They won the third quarter 33-20. Toronto finished with 10 made 3s. The Tempo also went 31-for-33 at the line.

Kiki Rice scored 17 points. She was 9-for-9 on free throws. Marina Mabrey scored 18. Seattle went 7-for-27 from 3. The Storm fell to 3-6.

Sun finally get rewarded late

Connecticut edged Los Angeles 84-81 in Hartford. Brittney Griner hit the 6,000th field goal of her WNBA career. She is the 18th player in league history to reach the mark. Aneesah Morrow had 17 points and 14 rebounds. Kennedy Burke scored 14 off the bench.

The Sparks got 16 from Ariel Atkins. Rae Burrell also scored 16. Kelsey Plum did not play due to a right ankle injury.

Standings watch

Minnesota leads the West at 6-2. Golden State is 5-2. Portland is 6-4. Las Vegas is 4-3. Atlanta leads the East at 5-2. Toronto and New York are both 5-4.
