JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia — Anthony Joshua proved once again why he remains one of boxing’s most resilient heavyweights. The former two-time heavyweight world champion overcame two shocking first-round knockdowns before storming back to stop Kristian Prenga in the second round Saturday night, setting the stage for a long-awaited showdown with fellow British superstar Tyson Fury.
The dramatic victory marked Joshua’s first fight since a personal tragedy that nearly derailed his career and demonstrated the resolve that has defined much of his journey inside the ring.
Disaster Strikes Early
Few expected Joshua to find himself in serious trouble moments after the opening bell. Prenga stunned the crowd by landing a crushing right hand followed by a powerful uppercut that sent Joshua crashing to the canvas.
Although Joshua quickly beat the count, he still appeared unsteady when Prenga connected again later in the round, sending the British star down for a second time. Suddenly, Joshua’s comeback was hanging by a thread.
Rather than panic, Joshua returned to the ring with a composed approach in the second round. He established his jab, regained control of the distance, and began finding his rhythm before unleashing the punches that changed the fight.

Immediately after the fight, Joshua shifted his focus toward Tyson Fury, who defeated Mariusz Wach by seventh-round stoppage in Thailand one day earlier.
Joshua offered both respect and a challenge to his longtime rival.
“Where is he? There’s two sides to this. Fire. And respect,” Joshua said. “I respect everything he’s done. We’re here now.”
Although many expected an official announcement regarding a Fury-Joshua showdown following Saturday’s event, no date or venue was revealed.
The blockbuster fight remains expected later this year.
Eddie Hearn Praises Joshua’s Courage
Promoter Eddie Hearn admitted he briefly feared the worst after watching Joshua hit the canvas twice.
“No one can imagine what he’s been through,” Hearn said. “In the first round, I said, ‘We have come back too soon.’ He needed boxing to get through this. The camp allowed him to focus his mind when he was going through grief.”
The comeback victory ultimately validated Joshua’s decision to return when he did.
Asked afterward how badly he was hurt during the opening round, Joshua smiled.
“I am still here to talk to you now!”
He also praised Prenga’s performance while explaining the mindset that allowed him to recover.
“Prenga is a strong guy, you know. He is going to do well; he has a bright future.” “I am a serious fighter; I know my way around the ring. He came and gave me a good test. But this is what champions do. We keep going. That’s life.”
Heavyweight Collision Looms
Joshua’s comeback victory, coupled with Fury’s win over Mariusz Wach just 24 hours earlier, has only intensified anticipation for one of the biggest fights British boxing has ever seen.
Both heavyweights have now successfully returned to action. Now, the boxing world waits for the official announcement that could finally bring Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury together in a showdown years in the making.
If Saturday proved anything, it’s that Joshua still possesses the resilience, heart, and knockout power capable of competing with the very best in the heavyweight division.
