The Athletics lost control in one rough inning Monday night, and Seattle did not let them back in.

The Mariners scored six runs in the third, hit four homers overall and beat the A’s 9-2 at Sutter Health Park. As a result, the Athletics fell to 27-27 but stayed in first place in the AL West, 1.5 games ahead of Seattle.

One inning breaks it open

Aaron Civale ran into trouble in the third, and the inning kept building.

Colt Emerson scored on Josh Naylor’s forceout. Then Randy Arozarena doubled in Naylor to make it 2-0.

After that, Luke Raley hit a two-run homer, and Dominic Canzone followed with another two-run shot. Suddenly, Seattle led 6-0.

J.P. Crawford added a solo homer in the fourth, ending Civale’s night with seven runs allowed on nine hits across four innings.

Kurtz joins McGwire

Nick Kurtz did not get a hit, but he still made franchise history.

Kurtz walked in the third inning, extending his on-base streak to 48 games. That tied Mark McGwire for the longest single-season on-base streak in Athletics history.

However, the A’s could not build much around it. They went 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position and grounded into two double plays.

Late runs only

Shea Langeliers got the A’s on the board in the eighth with his 13th homer of the season.

Then Tyler Soderstrom scored in the ninth when Jeff McNeil grounded into a double play. By then, Seattle had already added two more on Arozarena’s two-run homer in the top of the ninth.

Numbers that mattered

Civale took the loss and fell to 5-2 after allowing seven runs on nine hits.

Jack Perkins covered 4 2/3 innings out of the bullpen and struck out seven. Joel Kuhnel got the final out with a strikeout.

For Seattle, Arozarena went 3-for-5 with a homer, a double and three RBIs. Raley and Canzone each drove in two.

Up next

The series continues Tuesday night at Sutter Health Park.

Luis Severino is scheduled to start for the A’s. He enters 2-5 with a 4.23 ERA and 64 strikeouts. Seattle is set to counter with Emerson Hancock, who is 3-2 with a 3.07 ERA and 60 strikeouts.
