Jacob Wilson gave the Athletics one last burst of life Tuesday night. However, the Arizona Diamondbacks answered in the 10th and walked off the A’s 6-5 at Chase Field.
Wilson hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth, erasing a 4-2 deficit. Then Jonah Heim’s sacrifice fly gave the Athletics a 5-4 lead in the 10th.
Still, Arizona came back against Luis Medina. Nolan Arenado tied the game with an RBI single before Ildemaro Vargas ended it with a bases-loaded single.
The loss dropped the Athletics to 43-58.
Wilson brings them back
The A’s trailed 4-2 with two outs and nobody on in the ninth.
Then Donovan Walton lined a triple to center field. Wilson followed by driving Paul Sewald’s pitch over the left-field wall.
The two-run homer was Wilson’s seventh of the season. It also tied the game at 4 and completed a rally that began one inning earlier.
Shea Langeliers started that push with a solo homer in the eighth. His 23rd home run traveled 444 feet to left-center field and cut Arizona’s lead to two runs.
Next, Heim and Tommy White singled to create another chance. However, Jeff McNeil grounded into an inning-ending double play.
The A’s broke through again in the 10th. Tyler Soderstrom began the inning at second base, advanced on Langeliers’ groundout and scored on Heim’s sacrifice fly.
Arizona answers last
Medina entered for the bottom of the 10th with the Athletics leading 5-4.
Corbin Carroll started at second as the automatic runner. Then Medina walked Gabriel Moreno and Max Kepler, loading the bases with nobody out.
Arenado followed with a single to center that scored Carroll and tied the game. Medina struck out Tim Tawa for the first out, but Vargas ended it moments later.
Vargas grounded a single into left field. Moreno scored, giving Arizona the 6-5 win.
Medina took the loss after allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and two walks in one-third of an inning. The blown save was his third.
Early hole proves costly
Arizona took control in the first inning against Jack Perkins.
Ketel Marte walked, and Moreno singled with two outs. Then Kepler hit a three-run homer to right-center field for a 3-0 lead.
Perkins settled in after that. He completed five innings and allowed three runs on five hits, with one walk and four strikeouts.
The Athletics scored once in the third. Lawrence Butler led off with his first triple of the season, and Alika Williams brought him home with a single.
However, the inning ended when Heim grounded into a double play with the bases loaded.
Arizona added another run in the seventh. Geoff Hartlieb walked the first two batters, and a wild pitch moved both runners up.
Then Marte hit a sacrifice fly off José Suarez, giving the Diamondbacks a 4-1 lead.
Numbers that mattered
The Athletics finished with five runs on nine hits. Arizona also had nine hits but drew seven walks.
White went 2-for-5 and raised his average to .438. Langeliers had a homer, a walk and one RBI.
Also, Butler tripled and scored, while Walton walked, tripled and scored once. Wilson finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
The A’s went 2-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left seven runners on base.
For Arizona, Kepler went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and two walks. Vargas drove in the winning run, while Arenado supplied the tying hit in the 10th.
