PATTAYA, Thailand — Tyson Fury took another important step toward one of the biggest heavyweight fights in boxing history. The former heavyweight world champion returned to the ring Friday and scored a seventh-round stoppage victory over veteran Mariusz Wach in a tune-up bout, keeping his highly anticipated showdown with fellow Briton Anthony Joshua firmly on track for November.
Wach’s corner elected to stop the contest after the seventh round, giving Fury his second victory since ending his latest retirement. Although many expected Fury to chase an early knockout, the 37-year-old made it clear before the fight that ring activity not a quick finish was his top priority.
The strategy showed throughout the contest. Fury boxed patiently, controlled the pace with his jab, and gradually wore down the durable Polish veteran before Wach’s corner called an end to the fight.
“I’ve had one fight in two years… This is my second fight in two years, of course I wanted to get the rounds in,” Fury said.
“I want to be active.”
The victory improves Tyson Fury’s professional record to 36-2-1 with 25 knockouts, while the 46-year-old Wach falls to 39-14 (20 KOs).
The bout served as the latest step toward an all-British heavyweight blockbuster against Anthony Joshua. Both fighters have reportedly agreed to face one another in November after signing a deal brokered by Saudi boxing financier Turki Alalshikh.
Joshua, however, still has business to handle when he faces Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia. Fury admitted he wanted another fight under his belt rather than waiting on Joshua’s return.
Fighting for a Good Cause
Friday’s event also carried a charitable purpose. Held before an intimate crowd of approximately 1,500 fans in Pattaya, the event raised money for the Father Ray Foundation, a Thai charity that supports underprivileged children.
In another departure from tradition, Fury competed in the co-main event rather than closing the show, allowing the fundraiser to spotlight multiple attractions throughout the evening.
Heavyweight Showdown Nears
If Joshua takes care of business against Kristian Prenga, boxing fans could finally witness one of the most anticipated all-British heavyweight clashes in history.
For Tyson Fury, Friday’s performance accomplished exactly what he wanted valuable rounds, another victory, and momentum heading toward a long-awaited collision with Anthony Joshua later this year.
