Raiders Hold the No. 1 Pick But the Real Draft Will Be Won After It

LAS VEGAS — The spotlight is fixed on the top of the board, but inside Raiders headquarters, the mindset is much broader. Holding the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft, the Las Vegas Raiders are in position to reshape their franchise. History shows just how powerful that opportunity can be, with quarterbacks like Cam Newton, Joe Burrow, and Caleb Williams helping turn struggling teams into contenders.

But inside the building, the Raiders aren’t getting caught up in the hype. Yes, the first pick matters. It always does. But the Raiders still have nine more selections and that’s where the real foundation of this draft class will be built.

Assistant GM Brian Stark made that clear during Tuesday’s pre-draft press conference alongside general manager John Spytek. “All of those picks are important because you never know,” Stark said. “There’s plenty of first-round picks that don’t make it, and there’s plenty of seventh-round, sixth-round players that do.”

The message: the Raiders are treating every selection with equal weight.

Flexibility Is the Strategy

If there’s one theme defining the Raiders’ draft approach, it’s flexibility. Spytek reiterated a philosophy that has already shaped the front office’s identity stay open to everything.

After trading back multiple times in the 2025 draft to stockpile talent, the Raiders aren’t locking themselves into any single path this year either. “Open to all options,” Spytek said. “If someone’s offered us too much to not pick, then we’ll do that too.”

Whether it’s trading down again for more assets or moving up to grab a coveted prospect, Las Vegas is prepared to adapt in real time. If the Raiders do go quarterback at the top potentially selecting a name like Fernando Mendoza the pressure won’t stop there.

The rest of the class must complement that investment. That’s why positions like offensive line and wide receiver are already being discussed as key targets in the middle rounds. And while skill players grab headlines, Spytek didn’t shy away from praising the trenches. “The big boys… they’re sexy as hell,” he said with a smile.

Best Player Available Always

Despite roster needs, the Raiders are sticking to a core draft principle: don’t reach. “It always starts with the value of the player and the best players available,” Spytek said.

Team needs can break ties, but they won’t override the board. It’s a disciplined approach one designed to avoid costly mistakes that have plagued the franchise in past drafts.
