Strickland (30-7 MMA, 17-7 UFC) methodically pulled Hernandez into the type of fight he prefers a high-volume, pressure-heavy striking battle.
Hernandez, riding an eight-fight win streak entering the night, attempted to push pace and mix levels early. But as the rounds wore on, both fighters described Hernandez’s approach as “sloppy.”
That’s when Strickland capitalized. A crushing knee to the body landed flush, sending Hernandez retreating toward the fence. Strickland swarmed with punches, overwhelming him before finishing the sequence on the canvas as the referee stepped in. It was one of Strickland’s most decisive performances in recent memory.
Back in the Title Conversation
With the victory, Strickland improves to 5-2 in his last seven outings the only losses coming against former champion Dricus Du Plessis. On the microphone afterward, Strickland wasted no time calling for current middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev.
Whether he’ll be next is uncertain. Nassourdine Imavov also remains firmly in the mix as a potential challenger. But Strickland’s emphatic finish strengthened his case.
What It Means for Hernandez
For Hernandez (15-3 MMA, 9-3 UFC), the loss snaps an impressive eight-fight winning streak. A victory over Strickland likely would have vaulted him directly into title contention. Instead, he finds himself needing to regroup in one of the UFC’s deepest divisions. At 32, his window isn’t closed but it’s been delayed.
The UFC middleweight division remains one of the sport’s most competitive landscapes. Strickland just reminded everyone he still belongs at the top of it.
Now the question becomes: Does he get another shot at gold or does someone else cut the line? Either way, Saturday night in Houston reestablished one thing clearly: Sean Strickland isn’t going anywhere.
