History

On February 4th 1987, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation 5606, officially proclaiming February 4, 1987, as National Women in Sports Day. The proclamation highlighted historical barriers overcome by women athletes, the growth in participation post-Title IX (1972), and benefits like physical fitness, self-discipline, and leadership.

The Women’s Sports Foundation is an active ally that drives and shapes the voice of NGWSD, along with a broader ecosystem and culture shift from the systemic issues surrounding women in sports. Co-founding and powering since 1987 while honoring achievements and rallying for progress.
