Raiders Stagger Into Monday Night Showdown With Cowboys, Searching for Answers

The Las Vegas Raiders’ season is teetering as they prepare to face the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football. Las Vegas has dropped three straight and seven of its last eight. Spiraling from early-season hope into a stretch where answers have been few and far between. Now they walk into prime time against a Dallas team looking to rally emotionally and competitively after a heartbreaking week.

National expectations are low for Las Vegas

Nationally, belief in the Raiders is fading. Ali Bhanpuri of NFL.com joined a unanimous panel of NFL.com voters in picking the Cowboys to win Monday night, reflecting how far Las Vegas has fallen in public perception. Given the Raiders’ offensive struggles and constant miscues, it’s not hard to understand the skepticism.

Bhanpuri framed the matchup through the lens of tragedy and emotion for Dallas, following the death of defensive lineman Marshawn Kneeland during the Cowboys’ Week 10 bye.

“The Cowboys enter this prime-time tilt with extremely heavy hearts, after the tragic death of Marshawn Kneeland during the team’s Week 10 bye. It seems trivial right now to talk about matchup comparisons or defensive coverages or point differentials,” Bhanpuri said.

He noted that while football feels secondary in moments like this, the Cowboys still have a game to play.

“Dallas has a game to play, though, and as coach Brian Schottenheimer said on Wednesday, the team doesn’t ‘move on, but we do move forward.’ How Dallas moves forward is truly anybody’s guess. I think it’ll be with a spirited effort, led by the Cowboys’ elite passing game.”

Bhanpuri believes the key matchup will be Dallas’ passing attack against a vulnerable Raiders defense.

“If Dallas’ O-line can keep Maxx Crosby in check (as much as that’s even possible), I think the team’s talented pass catchers will find plenty of YAC opportunities versus a Raiders defense that ranks near the bottom of the league against quick and intermediate passes. And in that scenario, the Raiders’ offense isn’t currently constructed to match scores.”

Season-on-the-brink moment

For the Raiders, Monday night in Dallas feels like more than just another game. They’re fighting to snap a brutal skid, restore some confidence in a locker room that’s been battered by losses, and prove that they can respond under the lights against a playoff-caliber opponent.

If their offense can’t find life  and if the defense can’t slow down that “spirited effort” Dallas is expected to bring — the Raiders’ already fragile season could tilt even further in the wrong direction on national television.
