Before the Las Vegas Aces begins their semifinal series against the Indiana Fever, superstar A’ja Wilson has officially made history.
On Sunday, it was announced that Wilson has officially won her fourth MVP award.
She defeated Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier in a close race to win the award for the second straight season. Her victory this season puts Wilson ahead of other three-time MVPs such as Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie and Lauren Jackson. She is also the second player to win MVP awards in consecutive seasons (Cynthia Cooper did so in 1997 and 1998).
Wilson lead the WNBA in scoring (23.4 points per game) and blocks (2.3 bpg) while also adding 10.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.
Wilson’s play was a major reason why the Aces were able to make their way to the playoffs after a rough first half. Heading down the stretch at a 14-14 record, the Aces were able to ride a franchise record 17-game win streak to make a spirited run at the second overall pick seed. While it did come to an end during the first round series against the Seattle Storm, Wilson’s 38 points were a catalyst to helping the Aces advance to the next round.
“If she’s the best ever to play in the WNBA, I could make a strong argument she is the best ever to walk this planet,” Aces head coach Becky Hammon said about Wilson.
On top of four MVPs, Wilson won her third Defensive Player of the Year award earlier this week alongside Lynx forward Alanna Smith. She is also expected to claim her sixth All-WNBA appearance and fifth All-Defensive appearance.
However, despite all of the accolades, only one thing is currently on Wilson’s mind: her third WNBA championship.
