The Al Davis Memorial Torch at Allegiant Stadium will be lit by a special group of guests before Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
On Thursday, it was announced on the Raiders’ official team website that the Summerlin South Little League baseball team will light the torch prior to kickoff.
Summerlin South captured the hearts of the Las Vegas community during their spirited run this summer through the Little League ranks. Earning the right to represent the Mountain Region in the Little League World Series tournament, the team went all the way to the United States championship game, defeating Connecticut 8-2.
While they would fall just short of securing Nevada’s first Little League title after losing to Taiwan, Summerlin South exited Williamsport, Virginia, as the best Little League team in the nation.
The Al Davis Memorial Torch has been used to honor the legacy of the late Raiders owner since the team’s days in Oakland, with legendary head coach John Madden being the first to light the torch in 2011. Carol Davis, the late owner’s wife, was the first to do so in Las Vegas prior to the team’s inaugural game at Allegiant Stadium in 2020.
“The fire that burns the brightest in the Raiders’ organization is the will to win,” Davis said, and that quote is engraved on both the torch at Allegiant Stadium and outside the Raiders’ practice facility at Intermountain Health Performance Center in Henderson.
Summerlin South certainly embodied the will to win throughout the summer, and the Raiders are acknowledging this dedication with this honor.
