WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ciryl Gane spoiled history and reclaimed UFC gold in spectacular fashion. In the co-main event of UFC Freedom 250 at the White House, Gane delivered one of the biggest victories of his career, stopping former two-division champion Alex Pereira in the second round to become interim UFC heavyweight champion once again.
While much of the attention entering the fight centered around Pereira’s attempt to become the first three-division champion in UFC history, it was Gane who stole the spotlight with a masterful striking performance and emphatic finish.
Pereira entered the bout carrying enormous momentum and worldwide attention. The Brazilian knockout artist was making his heavyweight debut with a chance to add another historic achievement to an already legendary combat sports résumé.
Gane had other plans. The French heavyweight remained composed throughout the opening round, using movement, timing, and technical striking to frustrate Pereira and slowly build momentum.
“We worked on it,” Gane said after the fight. “I’m really proud of myself, really proud of my team. We knew it was possible to do that.”
Tactical Opening Round
Pereira came out aggressively, targeting Gane with a series of powerful kicks to both the head and legs. Gane defended well and refused to be drawn into a firefight early.
As the round progressed, Gane began finding his rhythm behind a sharp jab and fluid combinations. Late in the round, he landed a clean combination followed by a head kick that forced Pereira onto the defensive.
Gane also mixed in brief takedown attempts, keeping Pereira uncertain and preventing him from settling into a comfortable striking rhythm. Pereira answered with a slick combination just before the horn, but momentum was beginning to shift.
Referee Forced to Step In
Once the fight returned to the feet, Gane sensed the finish. He unleashed a relentless barrage of punches that repeatedly pierced Pereira’s defense. The Brazilian appeared hurt and unable to effectively respond as Gane continued pouring on the offense. All set up by his jab.
After absorbing a succession of unanswered strikes, Pereira was left standing but visibly compromised. The referee had seen enough. The contest was stopped at 1:27 of Round 2.
Interim Gold Returns to France
The victory makes Gane a two-time interim heavyweight champion and re-establishes him among the elite fighters in the division. For years, critics questioned whether Gane could consistently perform on the sport’s biggest stages.
On Sunday night, he delivered one of the finest performances of his career. “Everybody knows I’m a great athlete,” Gane said. “I’m really technical but people underestimate me.” That was certainly true entering UFC Freedom 250. It won’t be true anymore.
Aspinall Showdown Looms
With the victory secured, Gane immediately shifted his focus toward the future. The next logical step is a heavyweight title unification bout against undisputed champion Tom Aspinall once the British star recovers from his current eye injury.
The matchup has become one of the most anticipated heavyweight fights in the sport. Gane appears eager to finally settle unfinished business.
“Next, everybody knows,” Gane said. “Let’s do that in Paris in September.”
Pereira’s Historic Bid Falls Short
For Pereira, the loss ends one of the most ambitious championship pursuits in UFC history. Already a former middleweight and light heavyweight champion, Pereira was attempting to accomplish something no fighter has ever achieved by winning titles in three different weight classes.
Instead, he ran into a disciplined and determined heavyweight who refused to become part of someone else’s history. On a night when many expected Pereira to make history, it was Ciryl Gane who walked away with the gold. The road to determining the true king of the heavyweight division runs directly through him.
