Raiders bringing in former national champion for draft visit

The Las Vegas Raiders have their quarterback of the immediate future in Geno Smith, and extending him beyond 2025 ensures he receives some run in that role.

However, getting a deal done should not disillusion the Raiders about their quarterback situation. Smith is entering his age-35 season this year, and the need for a long-term solution under center still looms in the distance. The Raiders gave themselves some breathing room, but they should not wait too long before answering the question on what the future holds.

The Raiders have been linked to almost every imaginable quarterback in this draft class, and another one has recently been added to the ranks.

The Raiders’ recent draft visit carries championship pedigree with him.

According to The Draft Network’s Justin Melo, the Raiders have brought in North Dakota State quarterback Cam Miller as their latest “top 30” draft visit.

A two-time national champion at the FCS level with the Bison, Miller comes from the same school that produced Carson Wentz, Trey Lance and Easton Stick. While Wentz has been the only true hit out of those three, they all have remained in the NFL so far, with Lance signing a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Chargers on Friday. North Dakota State has built a clear quarterback pipeline as it continues its dominance on the college football stage.

Along with his proven success, Miller has showcased excellent dual-threat potential and the ability to elevate his game at critical junctures.

During his career with the Bison, Miller has thrown for 9,720 yards and 81 touchdowns, while adding 2,277 rushing yards and 48 touchdowns on the ground. Despite the lower level of competition in the FCS, Miller put on an excellent performance against the Colorado Buffaloes last season, throwing for 277 yards and a touchdown in that game. Combined with impressive showings at the East-West Shrine Bowl and his Pro Day, and Miller has emerged as a bona fide sleeper candidate amidst an overall weak quarterback crop.

With Aiden O’Connell still on the roster behind Smith, the Raiders can draft Miller on Day Three and stash him on the bench, allowing him to get up to NFL speed before potentially taking over for Smith.

In a quarterback crop lacking certainty, Miller stands out as a low-risk, high-upside option for the Raiders.
