Claressa Shields has suspension lifted but still faces enforcement

Syndication: Detroit Free Press

According to USA Today, boxing champion Claressa Shields still faces possible enforcement for testing positive for marijuana last month even though her suspension was “dissolved” on Friday according to an order issued by the Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission (MUCC), which regulates boxing in the state.

Shields announced the news on her X account.

“Officially unsuspended!’’ Shields wrote via X.com (formally Twitter).

“But y’all a little quiet! Y’all was real loud about me ‘supposedly’ smoking marijuana and being suspended! No worries! And still an Undisputed heavyweight champ! I have the Order to prove it!!!”, Shields continued.

However, the last line of the statement issued by the MUCC reads “The Order does not resolve the Formal Complaint … and does not close the enforcement action.”

Anne Morrel, newly elected chair of the MUCC told USA Today Sports that she could not comment on the matter.

Shields does face a fine and the possibility of having a win for her last fight overturned.

The bout took place on February 2 against Danielle Perkins when Shields became the undisputed heavyweight champion by unanimous decision in Shields’ hometown of Flint, Michigan.

Shields and her attorney David Slutsker said he and Shields are “happy and relieved that the suspension issue has been resolved in her favor.”

Shields’ manager, Mark Taffett expressed gratitude for the suspension is being dissolved.
