BETS: Midseason NBA Finals Futures Picks

© Peter Casey-Imagn Images

The odds for the 2025 NBA championship are expected to stabilize in the coming months. With the trade deadline now behind us, things have certainly been lively.

Several notable players, including Jimmy Butler, Anthony Davis, Luka Doncic, and De’Aaron Fox, have recently changed teams.

This activity has led to significant shifts in the NBA Finals futures market. The Boston Celtics and Oklahoma City Thunder continue to be viewed as the top contenders for the title.

On the other hand, teams like the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors are experiencing an uptick in their championship odds following some significant acquisitions.

Favorites

Boston Celtics

Boston demonstrated last year that it could excel in the postseason and secure a championship with its existing roster. Many past champions have cruised through the following season, which is why there’s no concern about the Celtics declining.

Although Boston maintains an impressive record that places them second in the East, Joe Mazzulla and his team appear unfazed by the need to narrow the gap between themselves and Cleveland.

However, these odds of +225 don’t offer much value. If you want to bet the Celtics you’re better off waiting for a better number.

Verdict: Pass

OKC Thunder

Could Sam Presti have finally found the secret formula? The Oklahoma City Thunder rank among the top teams in the league, yet they have not had a fully healthy starting lineup this season, as Hartenstein and Holmgren have only participated in a small portion of the games.

The Thunder boast one of the most formidable defensive teams in recent history, complemented by the leading candidate for the NBA MVP award spearheading their offensive efforts. They are truly a well-rounded squad.

Similar to the Celtics above, the Thunder are tremendous favorites, but if you want to bet them, you’re better off waiting for at least a +300 option.

Verdict: Pass

Contenders

Cleveland Cavaliers

Cleveland continues to hold the top record in the Eastern Conference as the season approaches its midpoint, surprising many who anticipated a decline after their impressive 15-0 start.

The decision to replace JB Bickerstaff with Kenny Atkinson appears to be a brilliant coaching move, with Atkinson now leading the NBA Coach of the Year race.

The Cavaliers’ star quartet—Jarrett Allen, Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, and Evan Mobley—are all contributing significantly, averaging at least 13.8 points per game while maintaining shooting percentages of 44.9% or better from the field.

With such offensive diversity, it’s no wonder the Cavs have the second-best scoring offense in the league, making them a challenging team to defend.

The Cavs at +800 odds is great value. You should absolutely bet the Cavs at this number to win the title.

Verdict: Bet

New York Knicks

This summer, the Knicks created a stir across the NBA by trading for Karl-Anthony Towns in a massive three-team, seven-player deal.

While his debut was somewhat underwhelming with just 12 points, the four-time All-Star is rapidly establishing himself as the most formidable big man the franchise has seen since Patrick Ewing played at Madison Square Garden.

The Knicks find themselves comfortably sitting in third place in the Eastern Conference and boast the fourth-best odds for the NBA Championship.

Much of this can be attributed to Towns’ ability to stretch defenses with his exceptional long-range shooting and his growing synergy in the pick-and-roll with All-Star guard Jalen Brunson.

The Knicks are a tad overvalued at the +1300 number, I would wait until you see at least +1500 on the board for them.

Verdict: Pass

Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets have spent a significant portion of the season outside the playoff picture in the Western Conference, but they are heating up at just the right moment and are climbing up the standings.

This turnaround can largely be attributed to Nikola Jokic, who is posting career-best numbers with an impressive 31.5 points per game.

The three-time MVP has already recorded 19 triple-doubles this season, keeping the Nuggets competitive despite losing key players in the offseason and dealing with Aaron Gordon’s injuries that sidelined him for a notable stretch of time.

Russell Westbrook also deserves considerable praise for this resurgence. The Nuggets will be a tough out for any team in the West.

I’d absolutely bet on them at +1400 odds to win the title.

Verdict: Bet

LA Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers have been quietly emerging as one of the top teams in the league recently. They continue to climb the Western Conference standings following a roster overhaul at the trade deadline.

The new superstar pairing of LeBron James and Luka Doncic has the potential to be something remarkable. However, the decision to reverse the Williams trade leaves some uncertainty about how the team will manage the remainder of the season without a star big man.

For now, it’s best to observe how this dynamic duo performs on the court before making any financial commitments to the team.

Verdict: Pass

Dark Horses

Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies are currently the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference with a 36-18 record. They rank among the top seven teams in the NBA for both offensive and defensive efficiency, alongside the Thunder and Celtics.

Despite Ja Morant’s struggle with injuries this season, players like Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane have stepped up, with Jackson playing at an All-NBA level.

The team has also developed young talent, including breakout contributions from Santi Aldama, Rookie of the Year contender Jaylen Wells, and Zach Edey’s strong inside scoring.

Playing at the fastest pace in the league, the Grizzlies could make a deep playoff push if Morant returns to form. I would absolutely bet on them to win the NBA Finals at +2500 odds.

Verdict: Bet

Milwaukee Bucks

The previous season was challenging for the partnership between Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard. Nonetheless, the current odds differ from what bettors were receiving at the time the trade was completed.

Despite the challenges faced last season, there were notable positives for Milwaukee.

When Lillard and Antetokounmpo shared the court, the Bucks outperformed their opponents, boasting a scoring differential of 10.2 points per 100 possessions and achieving a remarkable offensive efficiency rating in the 96th percentile (124.1).

Additionally, the team demonstrated enhancements on the defensive end following the All-Star break. However, injury concerns have resurfaced once more.

There’s a reason you’re able to get a 30-1 price on the Bucks. I need to see Giannis play some playoff basketball before I’m willing to bet on the Bucks to win another title.

Verdict: Pass

LA Clippers

The Clippers are probably the strangest team to be listed here. With that being said they have made some good moves to improve their roster. They added Bogdan Bogdanovic in a trade with the Hawks as well as signing Ben Simmons to their roster.

Kawhi Leonard is starting to look like his old self, while James Harden and Norman Powell have kept the offense going. This team has a lot of pieces and talent.

If they’re able to seamlessly mesh together will be the question. If Kawhi Leonard stays healthy this team will surprise in the playoffs. The fact that you can get +3500 on the Clippers to win the title is a fantastic value.

I would absolutely place a small wager on the Clippers to win the title at +3500 odds.

Verdict: Bet

Golden State Warriors

The inevitable has occurred: the Miami Heat have finally moved on from their challenges with Jimmy Butler by trading him to the Golden State Warriors.

With Butler’s tenure in Miami coming to a close, many questions arise, especially as the Warriors aim to provide Steph Curry with another opportunity to secure a championship before his career winds down.

A key consideration surrounding this trade is whether Butler can be the missing piece the Warriors need.

Time will tell if he fits into their lineup, but with Curry’s career window closing, action had to be taken. The combination of Butler and Draymond Green could either spark a new chapter or serve as the fresh start Butler needs after his time with the Heat.

There are also rumors circulating that Butler may not be keen on signing an extension with the Warriors, raising concerns about his commitment to helping a team that finds itself just outside the play-in picture.

This trade has the potential for both success and failure, and it will be intriguing to see how it plays out for the Warriors for the rest of the season.

It’s definitely worth a small wager at +4000 odds on the Warriors to win the title.
