The first name linked to Pete Carroll’s coaching staff is one that is familiar with the Super Bowl-winning head coach.
Hired by the Las Vegas Raiders on Friday, one of the first items on Carroll’s to-do list is to assemble a coaching staff that will help him get the most out of his players.
With decades of coaching experience under his belt, Carroll will have plenty of connections around the league to reach out to in order to complete this task.
For his offensive coordinator, Carroll is currently considering bringing along a former assistant of his: Miami Dolphins passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Darrell Bevell.
“Dolphins QB coach Darrell Bevell has strong chance to land the Raiders’ OC job, per source, but they’ll interview others and that could change. DC is wide open,” The Athletic’s Tashan Reed wrote. “Vegas must interview two diverse candidates for both roles, plus 1 diverse QB coach candidate, to satisfy Rooney Rule.”
It would make sense for Carroll and Bevell to reunite in Las Vegas, as the two were together during the peak of the head coach’s time with the Seattle Seahawks. Bevell served as Seattle’s offensive coordinator from 2011-17, including both of their Super Bowl appearances.
While Bevell is working with quarterbacks in Miami, his offenses in Seattle were mostly predicated around the running game featuring Marshawn Lynch. Even with the presence of Russell Wilson, Bevell fielded top-five rushing attacks four times as offensive coordinator.
Bevell also has experience outside of the Carroll sphere of influence to fall back on. He served as offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings (2006-10), Detroit Lions (2019-20) and Jacksonville Jaguars (2021). He also served as interim head coach for the Lions and Jaguars.
With Wilson as a free agent, there is a chance the Raiders choose to bring both him and Bevell along to put the band back together again, at least until a long-term solution becomes clear.
Bevell’s deep connection with Carroll puts him in the driver’s seat for offensive coordinator, but the interview process will ultimately decide who gets the nod.
