UFC 300 Preview: Alex Pereira vs. Jamahal Hill

@Wendell Cruz-USA Today Sports

With UFC 300 just around the corner, it’s time to look at the main event of that card: Alex Pereira and Jamahal Hill. The two light heavyweight fighters are fighting for the UFC light heavyweight belt on April 13.

This should be an exciting main event for UFC 300. Moreover, it’s an opportunity for both fighters to elevate their MMA careers. What should UFC fans expect from the main event? Who has the upper hand in the match-up?

The tape on Alex Pereira

The light heavyweight division has some prestigious history in the UFC, with Jon Jones dominating the division. Now, Alex Pereira has a chance to put a stranglehold on the division. With a win, he’ll be one step closer to doing so.

Pereira (9-2, seven KO’s) had a historic rise to being the champion, defeating Jiri Prochazka for the belt. The Brazilian superstar has also defeated fighters such as Israel Adesanya and Sean Strickland, making him a force. Having an extensive kickboxing background can do that for a fighter.

The tape on Jamahal Hill

Contrary to Alex Pereira being a kickboxer, Jamahal Hill is a pure mixed martial artist. He incorporates different styles, mainly stemming from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, making him a well-rounded fighter.

If Hill (12-1) is to defeat Pereira, the Grand Rapids native can’t let the champion get on top of him. That was the case in the Prochazka-Pereira fight, where the Brazilian fighter established his dominance. He’ll come after Hill with many strikes (five significant strikes landed a minute for Pereira), so Hill needs to defend early and often.

The verdict

“Sweet Dreams” is a good fighter that deserves plenty of praise. His striking expertise (7.31 SLpM) is on par with Alex Pereira, making him a formidable foe for the champion.

But Jamahal Hill might not be 100% for the fight, so there’s a chance it might not happen. However, if it does go down, the advantage goes to “Poatan”. The champion knows how to sniff out weaknesses and pounce, making him an incredible fighter.
