UFC 300 Preview: Justin Gaethje vs. Max Holloway

@Jeff Swinger-USA Today Sports

Perhaps one of the more noteworthy match-ups on UFC 300, Justin Gaethje and Max Holloway features two of the most notable lightweights in the UFC. The match is set to potentially be the best on the card, possibly surpassing the card’s main events.

In the words of Bruce Banner, “It’s TIME” to dissect this match-up. As it stands, this match should be good to go. What qualities does Gaethje possess? How can Max Holloway win? Let’s dive into this barn burner and see where the match will lead us.

The Tape on Justin Gaethje

Justin Gaethje isn’t your typical UFC striker. “The Highlight” was a NCAA Division I All-American during his time at Northern Colorado. Previously, he was the Lightweight Champion at World Series of Fighting. Gaethje has a record of 25-4 with 20 knockouts.

As of 2023, Gaethje is ranked #2 in the UFC lightweight rankings, and rightfully so. He mixes precise striking ability with intelligent defense. That’s what makes “The Highlight” dangerous.

If Justin Gaethje wants to beat Max Holloway, he must incorporate this style. Combined with wearing down Holloway with timely grappling, “The Highlight” must come with a concrete plan to take him down.

The Tape on Max Holloway

Max Holloway is a unique fighter, in that he incorporates numerous fighting styles in his game. Whether it’s kickboxing, muay thai, or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Holloway is a well-rounded UFC star.

That’s the reason why he holds a 25-7 record. His ability to use the appropriate attack during a fight makes him versatile. In turn, it also makes Holloway unpredictable, causing trouble for his opponents.

“Blessed” must catch Justin Gaethje off-guard in this fight. Gaethje always comes to each fight prepared. He’s the type of fighter that does his homework on each opponent. If Holloway throws a curve ball at “The Highlight,” it’s a win for Holloway.

Who Wins and Why?

I like Max Holloway in this match-up for the sheer unpredictability alone. “Blessed” knows how to come out of nowhere with a strike, making him a good pick.

It’s not to say that Justin Gaethje will lose this match. As mentioned earlier, the former Interim Lightweight Champion always comes prepared. There’s a good chance “The Highlight” knows every part of Holloway’s fighting styles.
