Kylian Mbappé once again proved why he is widely regarded as the best player in world football. After seeing a first-half penalty saved, the French superstar responded with a spectacular second-half strike before assisting another goal as France defeated Morocco 2-0 on Thursday at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, to book its place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinals.
The victory sends Didier Deschamps’ side into a blockbuster semifinal, where France will face the winner of Belgium and Spain. For a brief moment, it appeared Morocco had found a way to slow down France’s biggest weapon.
Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou denied Mbappé from the penalty spot in the opening half, keeping the Atlas Lions level and frustrating the tournament favorites.
But great players rarely stay quiet for long. In the 60th minute, Mbappé curled a brilliant strike beyond Bounou to break the deadlock and ignite the French attack.
Just six minutes later, Ousmane Dembélé doubled France’s advantage, finishing off another flowing move after Mbappé’s intelligent run created space in the Moroccan defense.
France’s Attack Continues to Shine
France’s front line has been one of the stories of the tournament. Mbappé, Dembélé, Michael Olise, Désiré Doué, and Bradley Barcola have overwhelmed opponents with their pace, creativity, and relentless movement.
Their chemistry has drawn comparisons to some of the greatest attacking units in World Cup history, with France consistently creating scoring opportunities regardless of the defensive approach taken against them.
Morocco alternated between sitting deep and pressing higher up the field, but neither strategy was enough to contain Les Bleus.
Mbappé Chasing More History
Mbappé’s goal pulled him level with Lionel Messi in the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot while adding another remarkable milestone to his already legendary résumé. The French captain became the first player in history to score eight goals in two separate World Cups after matching the feat he achieved in Qatar four years earlier.
He also surpassed 100 career goal contributions for the French national team and now owns 20 goals in just 20 World Cup appearances. At only 27 years old, Mbappé continues to rewrite the record books and strengthen his case as the world’s premier player.
Morocco’s Historic Run Ends
Morocco entered the match as France’s toughest opponent of the tournament and battled bravely throughout the contest. Bounou produced several outstanding saves to keep his nation within striking distance, but France’s quality in the attacking third ultimately proved too much.
Although their remarkable World Cup journey comes to an end, Morocco once again demonstrated why they have become one of international football’s rising powers.
France Eyes Another World Cup Title
With the victory, France advances to the semifinals and remains firmly on course for another World Cup championship. If Mbappé and France’s explosive attack continue producing performances like this, Les Bleus will be difficult for anyone left in the tournament to stop.
One step closer to another title, France continues to look every bit like the team to beat.
