Matt Freese Struggles as USMNT Falls Short Against Belgium

The United States had a chance to make another statement on home soil. Instead, its World Cup run ended with a painful 4-1 loss to Belgium, and goalkeeper Matt Freese will be at the center of the conversation. Along with Folarin Balogun red card suspension that was overturned.

Freese had been steady throughout much of the tournament, but in the biggest match of the Americans’ campaign, he delivered his worst performance. Against a Belgian side that punished every mistake, the margin for error was too thin.

Freese Fails to Meet the Moment

Belgium did not need help, but the United States gave them plenty. Freese struggled with positioning, decision-making, and command of his box throughout the match. At this level, one mistake can change a knockout game. Multiple mistakes can end a tournament.

That is exactly what happened. The U.S. needed its goalkeeper to keep the match manageable and give the attack time to find answers. Instead, Belgium gained confidence, took control, and forced the Americans to chase the game.

Belgium Punishes Every Mistake

Belgium’s quality was clear, but the scoreline also reflected a U.S. team that made life too easy for its opponent. Once Belgium found space in transition, Freese and the American back line never looked settled. Every Belgian attack felt dangerous, and the United States never fully recovered from the early pressure.

By the time Belgium extended its advantage, the match had shifted from a competitive knockout clash into damage control.

A Harsh Lesson for the USMNT

This loss will sting because the opportunity was there. The United States was playing at home, had momentum from its Round of 32 win, and had Folarin Balogun available after his suspension was lifted. But knockout soccer demands sharpness in every area, and the Americans were not sharp enough. They didn’t play with the energy or sense of urgency from a knockout round. They showed the world that they are still not ready to the soccer elites in the world just yet.

Freese will take criticism, and fairly so, but the defeat was also a reminder that the U.S. still has another level to reach against elite European opposition.

Belgium advanced to the quarterfinals with a convincing win, while the United States exits the World Cup earlier than it hoped. For Freese, it was a nightmare night.

For the USMNT, it was a missed opportunity. The Americans had the stage, the crowd, and the chance to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002. Instead, they leave the tournament wondering what could have been.
