The United States men’s national team has received a major boost ahead of its Round of 16 showdown with Belgium. FIFA has suspended the automatic one-match ban issued to striker Folarin Balogun following his red card against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Making the USMNT’s leading scorer available for Monday night’s knockout match in Seattle.
In a statement released on its official website, FIFA confirmed that Balogun’s suspension has been lifted under a probationary ruling.
“By operation of Article 27 FDC, the implementation of the automatic match suspension for USA player Folarin Balogun is suspended for a probationary period of one (1) year.”
The decision means Balogun will be eligible to face Belgium despite being sent off during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Round of 32.
U.S. Soccer Welcomes the Decision
U.S. Soccer quickly acknowledged FIFA’s ruling and shifted its attention to the knockout match.
“We accept the decision of the Disciplinary Committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to compete tomorrow. Our full attention is focused on the Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle, and we look forward to the continued support of our amazing fans.”
The reinstatement gives head coach Mauricio Pochettino one of his most dangerous attacking weapons as the Americans chase their first World Cup quarterfinal appearance since 2002.
Balogun’s Roller-Coaster Performance
Balogun experienced both the highest and lowest moments of the match against Bosnia-Herzegovina. The AS Monaco striker gave the United States a 1-0 lead just before halftime with his third goal of the tournament. Continuing his impressive World Cup campaign.
However, his night took a dramatic turn in the 64th minute when referee Raphael Claus issued a straight red card after a VAR review determined Balogun had made a dangerous challenge on Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic.
The dismissal initially meant Balogun would miss the Round of 16, but FIFA’s disciplinary ruling has now changed that outcome.
Balogun’s availability significantly strengthens the U.S. attack heading into one of its biggest matches in more than two decades. The Americans are seeking their first appearance in a World Cup quarterfinal since the 2002 tournament, where they advanced to the last eight before falling to Germany.
With Balogun back in the lineup, the U.S. will have its leading scorer available as it attempts to upset Belgium and continue its remarkable World Cup run.
President Trump Reacts
The decision also drew a response from U.S. President Donald Trump, who praised FIFA’s ruling on Truth Social.
“Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!”
Now, with the controversy behind them, the United States turns its full attention to Belgium. Knowing its leading striker will once again be available when the knockout stage continues in Seattle.
