DONCASTER, England — Filip Hrgovic spoiled the hometown celebration for Dave Allen in devastating fashion Saturday night. The Croatian heavyweight overwhelmed Allen from the opening bell before forcing a corner stoppage with just 23 seconds remaining in the third round at Eco-Power Stadium in Doncaster. The Queensberry-promoted event was titled “Dave vs. Goliath,” but there would be no underdog miracle for the beloved Yorkshire heavyweight.

Filip Hrgovic immediately established control behind a punishing jab and relentless pressure, using his size, reach, and accuracy to dominate Allen throughout the short fight. “I wanted to finish him fast to make a statement,” Hrgovic said afterward.

Allen Outmatched Early

Despite the crowd support and emotional homecoming atmosphere, Allen struggled from the outset. The towering Croatian consistently pinned Allen against the ropes and landed heavy combinations with both hands.

Allen attempted several trademark overhand rights but was largely unable to close distance effectively. By the third round, the punishment became too severe. Trainer Jamie Moore threw in the towel to prevent further damage, prompting referee Steve Gray to stop the fight.

Initially frustrated with the stoppage, Allen later accepted his corner’s decision. “Jamie is like my big brother,” Allen said. “If they say enough is enough, then enough is enough.”

The always-honest Allen also acknowledged the gap in class between himself and Hrgovic. “Filip Hrgovic is too good for me.”

Moses Itauma Fight Looming?

After the victory, Queensberry promoter George Warren revealed that Hrgovic is now firmly in the mix to face rising heavyweight sensation Moses Itauma on Aug. 8.

Hrgovic welcomed the possibility. “I want to fight anyone in the division, Moses or anyone,” he said. The potential matchup would immediately become one of the most intriguing heavyweight fights involving the sport’s next generation.

Despite the loss, Allen remained appreciative of the support he has received throughout his career. “These people have given me the career of a world champion,” Allen said.

He also admitted uncertainty about whether he can compete at the top domestic level moving forward, even mentioning concerns about facing Richard Riakporhe.

Hrgovic Continues Heavyweight Push

Now ranked No. 5 by The Ring Magazine, Hrgovic continues rebuilding momentum as he pursues a heavyweight world title opportunity. The dominant performance served as another reminder of the Croatian’s power and experience against rugged opposition.

Filip Hrgovic made a statement in Doncaster. And with talk now shifting toward Moses Itauma, the heavyweight division may soon get another major clash between contenders looking to break into the elite tier.
