Conor McGregor has fought some of the most dangerous men in combat sports, but his latest opponent presented an entirely different challenge: a drone carrying an energy drink.
The former two-division UFC champion recently underwent surgery following the knee injury that ended his highly anticipated return against Max Holloway at UFC 329 after just 69 seconds.
Now beginning another rehabilitation process, McGregor apparently decided to celebrate a successful surgery by ordering an energy drink via drone delivery. Retrieving it proved far more difficult than expected.
McGregor Gets Creative With His Crutches
Video circulating online showed the 38-year-old Irish superstar standing on a balcony while using crutches following surgery. A delivery drone hovered outside the balcony with McGregor’s order hanging below it, but the package remained frustratingly out of reach.
That’s when McGregor improvised. Unable to simply reach over and grab the delivery, McGregor began using one of his crutches as an extension of his arm in an attempt to hook the package.
It quickly turned into an entertaining battle between man and machine. McGregor repeatedly tried to snag the delivery while the drone remained hovering just beyond his reach.
Some viewers pointed out that turning the crutch around and using the curved end might have made the mission considerably easier. But McGregor eventually figured out a way to get the job done.
Another Recovery Begins
The lighthearted moment comes after another devastating injury setback for McGregor. Five years after his previous UFC appearance ended when he suffered a gruesome broken left leg against Dustin Poirier in July 2021, McGregor finally returned to competition against Holloway at UFC 329 in Las Vegas.
The comeback barely had a chance to begin. McGregor injured his right knee after launching an attack early in the opening round. He attempted to continue but repeatedly struggled to put weight on the leg, forcing the fight to be stopped just 1:09 into Round 1. Holloway was awarded the TKO victory.
McGregor Still Wants One More UFC Fight
Despite another significant setback, McGregor has indicated that he isn’t ready to walk away from fighting. Following UFC 329, “The Notorious” expressed his intention to recover, return to martial arts training and complete the final fight remaining on his UFC contract.
How long that process takes remains to be seen. McGregor already knows better than most fighters how difficult the road back from a major injury can be. His broken leg against Poirier ultimately contributed to a five-year absence from the Octagon.
This time, the former featherweight and lightweight champion is hoping the road back will be much shorter. For now, however, McGregor’s fights aren’t happening inside the Octagon.
His latest battle involved a pair of crutches, a hovering drone and an energy drink that was just slightly out of reach. Even during recovery, Conor McGregor somehow finds a way to make things entertaining.
