The bats stayed loud for the Athletics on Wednesday.

Oakland pounded the Arizona Diamondbacks 13-3 at Salt River Fields, stretching its spring winning streak to five games. The A’s collected 14 hits, launched five home runs and pulled away with a five-run fifth inning.

Max Muncy set the tone early and nearly made history in the process. The third baseman went 3-for-3 with a homer, double, walk and four runs scored, finishing just a triple shy of the cycle. Meanwhile, Andy Ibáñez delivered three RBIs, including a two-run homer in the second that erased Arizona’s early lead.

Homers come in waves

Arizona struck first when Ildemaro Vargas homered in the opening inning. However, the A’s wasted little time responding.

Ibáñez launched a two-run shot in the second to flip the score. Then Shea Langeliers pushed Oakland ahead again with a solo blast in the third. One inning later, Muncy crushed another solo homer to left, continuing what has been a strong spring at the plate.

The decisive blow came in the fifth.

Tyler Soderstrom ripped a three-run homer to right-center to break the game open. Moments later, Brent Rooker followed with a towering solo shot. By the time Ibáñez lined an RBI single later in the inning, the A’s had stretched the lead to 9-2 and firmly taken control.

Muncy drives the offense

While the power surge stole the headlines, Muncy quietly dominated the middle of the lineup.

He reached base four times, doubled in the fifth and later drove in a run with a seventh-inning single. A wild pitch brought him home moments later as Oakland kept piling on. Michael Stefanic also chipped in with two hits and an RBI, helping the A’s tack on late insurance.

By the eighth inning, the scoreboard read 13-2.

Bullpen finishes the job

Luis Morales earned the win after allowing two runs, one earned, over 4 2/3 innings. From there, Oakland’s bullpen took control.

Scott Barlow, Justin Sterner, Hogan Harris and Nick Anderson combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings while striking out five. Arizona managed just five hits in the game and never mounted a serious threat after the early innings.

A ninth-inning solo homer from Danny Serretti trimmed the final margin, but the outcome had long been decided.

Up next

The A’s will look to extend their five-game spring winning streak Thursday when they face the Texas Rangers.
