UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria says he expects to return this summer but whether that includes the rumored White House mega-card remains unclear. Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) hasn’t competed since knocking out Charles Oliveira at UFC 317 to claim the vacant lightweight title. Personal matters sidelined him afterward, ultimately leading the UFC to create an interim belt.
That interim title now belongs to Justin Gaethje, who defeated Paddy Pimblett at UFC 324.
White House Main Event?
The UFC has yet to officially announce fights for the White House event, though CEO Dana White has stated matchmaking is complete. Rumors point toward a Topuria vs. Gaethje title unification bout headlining the historic card. Ilia Topuria, however, says he’s in the dark. “As of right now, I have no f*cking idea what’s going on… I know that I’m going to fight in the summer, but I don’t have any specific date or place.”
When asked directly about Gaethje, Topuria smiled and responded: “I think so.” But he also left the door open for a showdown with the division’s No. 2-ranked contender, Arman Tsarukyan. “Justin, Arman I don’t care. Both of them. Same night.”
Bigger Than Lightweight?
Beyond unifying the 155-pound title, Topuria is already thinking about legacy.
He floated two ambitious possibilities involving Islam Makhachev:
-
Move up to welterweight (170 lbs) and attempt to become the UFC’s first three-division champion.
-
Create a one-off “pound-for-pound” championship between the sport’s top two ranked fighters.
“You put two of the best guys in the world, you put the pound-for-pound belt in the middle. Whoever wins is the best.”
It’s a bold concept and very on-brand for Topuria, who has leaned into his undefeated record and growing star power since capturing gold.
The Real Question
From a matchmaking standpoint, Gaethje makes the most sense:
But Tsarukyan presents a different test arguably the most technical threat in the division.
For now, the only certainty is timing: Summer. And if the White House event does land Topuria vs. Gaethje, it could become one of the biggest lightweight fights of the modern era.
