The Athletics are 0-4 to open the Cactus League after Milwaukee blanked them 10-0 Tuesday at Hohokam Stadium, a game that slipped away in the second and never came back.

Oakland finished with five hits, drew two walks and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. The A’s put a runner on in the first when Nick Kurtz singled, but Brent Rooker struck out and Tyler Soderstrom lined out to end the inning.

Black delivers the early hammer

Milwaukee broke through in the second when Blake Perkins singled, then Tyler Black jumped on a Mason Barnett pitch and launched a two-run homer to right. That was the start of a big afternoon for Black, who finished 3 for 3 with six RBIs, including the homer, a three-run single in the third and an RBI double in the fifth.

The third inning turned the game into an uphill climb. After Sal Frelick singled and stole second, Brice Turang walked and Blake Perkins walked to load the bases. Black then lined a three-run single to center to make it 5-0.

A’s get chances, Brewers keep stacking

Oakland had a few windows to answer. Junior Perez singled in the third and Shea Langeliers walked, but Kurtz lined out to shortstop to end the threat. Jacob Wilson singled in the fourth and Jeff McNeil was hit by a pitch, but the rally ended with a strikeout and groundout.

Milwaukee added two more in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by Black and David Hamilton. The Brewers kept tacking on from there, including a sacrifice fly in the seventh and two runs in the ninth, one scoring after a fielding error by Euribiel Angeles.

Up next

The A’s are off Wednesday before facing the Texas Rangers on Thursday.
