HOUSTON — Another fight. Another finish. Jacobe Smith remained undefeated Saturday night with a brutal first-round ground-and-pound knockout over Josiah Harrell at UFC Houston, delivering one of the most violent stoppages of the card. The ending was as sudden as it was jarring.
Harrell actually initiated the key sequence, scoring a takedown that momentarily appeared to shift momentum in his favor. It lasted seconds. Smith immediately reversed position, postured up and unleashed a barrage of heavy punches. Harrell appeared to go limp after just a few clean shots, but referee Kerry Hatley hesitated before stepping in. Smith continued landing unanswered blows until the fight was officially stopped at 3:01 of Round 1.
Harrell required several moments to recover but ultimately exited the octagon under his own power. Smith? Calm. Composed. Already thinking ahead.
Now 12-0 as a professional, Smith wasted no time making his intentions known. “Another one,” Smith said. “Keep on stacking these knockouts. Houston, Texas, we have a star in the building tonight.” Then came the callout. “I got a name in mind. Outside of the top 15, that’s where I want to be but Kevin Holland, where’s your… at?” The welterweight division may have just found its next loud contender.
Dominance From Start to Finish
Before the knockout sequence, Smith showcased the physical advantages that have fueled his rapid rise. The former All-American wrestler out of Oklahoma State controlled distance with stiff jabs and relentless forward pressure. Harrell attempted to engage and eventually sought refuge in grappling only to find himself overwhelmed once the fight hit the mat. “I felt his body go limp,” Smith said. “That’s all she wrote.”
A Prospect on the Rise
At 170 pounds, the UFC welterweight division remains one of the promotion’s deepest. But Smith’s blend of elite wrestling, power, and aggression has quickly turned him into one of the most intriguing prospects on the roster.
With another highlight finish added to his resume, ranked opposition may not be far away. If he keeps stacking performances like this, Smith won’t need to call anyone out. They’ll be calling him.
