Khalil Rountree had a lot of insight on why the UFC golden gloves experiment didn’t work. Khalil Rountree’s behind the scenes insight on The Joe Rogan Experience cuts through all the noise. It turns out the UFC tested hundreds of methods to keep the logos from rubbing off during fights, but nothing worked reliably. That’s a big deal when you’re dealing with a brand as tightly controlled as the UFC.
“The main thing was that because of the leather, the logos weren’t sticking,” Rountree said. “So the logos were peeling off, peeling off, peeling off. I’m telling you, we tried hundreds of different ways to get the UFC logo printed on the gloves so that they will not come off in the octagon. From me testing it on the canvas, doing live situations, sparring, rubbing it in the cage, blah blah, it just would not [stay on].”
Branding is everything
But once fans started noticing fewer knockouts, speculation began to swirl. Did the new gloves dull power? The truth is, the sample size was simply too small to make a real judgment. Just a handful of events using them across a limited timeframe. Fighters like Pereira and Rountree had no issue dishing out and absorbing heavy shots in the new design.
Rountree’s lone outing in the gold variant gloves at UFC 307 a brutal title bout with Pereira was a perfect case study in that regard. Despite the improved structure and softer edges of the gloves, neither man’s punching power was diminished, and the fight ended with Pereira securing a stoppage in the fifth after a grueling war.
Ultimately, the glove recall had nothing to do with fighter performance or safety. It came down to a branding flaw logos that wouldn’t stay on and in a promotion where visual consistency and presentation are king, that was enough to scrap the whole project.
