The Las Vegas Raiders have made several moves to bolster their secondary during the offseason.

Gone are Jack Jones and Nate Hobbs, but in are free agent signing Eric Stokes and third-round rookie Darien Porter. However, speculation has continued to swirl around whether the Raiders are done adding at the position. Rumors have immediately centered around recently released Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander, or pursuing a trade for Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

However, a forgotten option could be on the table for the Raiders, and they are kicking the tires on him as minicamp rolls on.

A former Pete Carroll player could be reuniting with the head coach in Las Vegas.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, free agent cornerback Shaquill Griffin is visiting the Raiders.

A third-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 2017, Griffin was drafted by Carroll during his time as head coach, meaning he fits the archetype that the coach wants in defensive backs. Griffin’s run with the Seahawks was productive, earning a Pro Bowl nod in 2019.

However, the last few years have not gone according to plan for Griffin.

Signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021, Griffin struggled to match his production with the Seahawks and was released in 2023. He has played with three teams over the last two seasons, including with the Minnesota Vikings in 2024. His lone season in Minnesota, however, was the best of Griffin’s career since leaving Seattle, so there is the chance that he can find a role as reliable veteran depth.

Griffin would compete for a starting role in Las Vegas, but it would be somewhat of a sign of confidence in the group they have.

Stokes and Porter would have to compete with Griffin for a spot in the starting lineup, but at least they would be given the opportunity to earn it, unlike if Ramsey or Alexander joined the Raiders. Younger options like Jakorian Bennett and Decamerion Richardson would also likely keep their spots on the roster, while Darnay Holmes would likely earn the first crack at replacing Hobbs in the slot.

Carroll knows what Griffin brings to a team, and signing with the Raiders would be proof that he still believes one of his former players can contribute.
