Connor Benn and Chris Eubanks Jr really hate each other. The bad blood between these two are the worst amongst anyone in boxing. This isn’t the most bitter boxing in the U.K but the most bitter in all of boxing. Finally on Saturday the two rivals will get into the ring in Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in front of 62,000 fans. It’s deep and here’s why this rivalry is different.
Let’s take a stroll back into November 1990 when Chris Eubanks and Nigel Benn first fought for the vacant WBO middleweight championship. Eubanks would go on to stop Benn in the 9th round to win the belt. The two would line it back up in October 1993. They would end up fighting to a draw in the rematch. The two fighters would seem to go separate ways but would be drawn back together by their sons.
Build up
Chris Eubanks Jr and Conor Benn were set to fight in October of 2022 but Benn was busted for PED’s before the fight which got the bout canceled. But finally the two bitter rivals will get a chance to settle the score in the ring. Within the last few years there’s been a lot of back and forth between the two fighters father’s. Boxing fans were getting hyped up for the match. But Eubanks Jr claims to not have the same issues with his opponent as his father had.
“Growing up, I always knew they were rivals. I remember seeing the injuries and mental hardships my father had to go through during that period of time. The part of his tongue he lost in a fight, it was brutal. I have to respect what he went through and I can’t muddy what he went through back then during that rivalry, those fights with Benn.”
Despite those diplomatic words, in a pre-fight face off in February Eubank Jr smashed an egg on the side of Benn’s head. For those antics Eubanks Jr received a $100,000 fine. Boxing fans never bought the diplomacy.
Benn responded on X saying that this will be the most action that Eubank Jr. will have in their fight.
Eubanks Jr failed to make weight on Friday weighing in at 160.5 which is .5 off the 160 pound limit. But Eubanks Jr. did make the rehydration clause of 170 pounds for Saturday so the fight is still on. Finally we will be able to put this bitter rivalry to an end in the ring. Boxing fans in the U.K finally get to see the end of this family chapter.
