Brewers outlast A’s 15-14 in 12 as 7 homers still aren’t enough

Brewers win 15-14 in 12 innings in the A’s Summerlin home opener after a night of chaos, 11 homers and multiple extra-inning lead changes. Nick Kurtz and Tyler Soderstrom hit two homers each, but Milwaukee got the final run on a 12th-inning fielder’s choice.

The Athletics opened their first Summerlin homestand with a wild one. The crowd got offense, chaos and extra innings, but Milwaukee got the final swing in a 15-14, 12-inning win Monday night at Las Vegas Ballpark.

The A’s hit seven homers and scored 14 runs, but the NL Central-leading Brewers kept answering. Brice Turang’s fielder’s choice in the 12th scored Christian Yelich and handed the Athletics their second-straight loss.

Something in the water

Maybe it is something in the Las Vegas water.

Two nights earlier, the Aviators and Aces combined for 31 runs in a 21-10 Las Vegas win. Then the A’s and Brewers matched the madness with 29 runs, 34 hits and 11 home runs.

The announced crowd of 8,519 was over capacity and got a full show. Jersey Shore cast member and Vegas DJ Pauly D also threw out the first pitch before the opener.

Power everywhere

Shea Langeliers led off the bottom of the first with his 17th homer. Then Zack Gelof scored on Alika Williams’ double in the second to put the A’s ahead 2-1.

Milwaukee answered with three runs in the third, but the A’s punched back. Max Muncy tied it with a two-run single before Tyler Soderstrom hit a three-run homer. Gelof followed with a solo shot, giving the Athletics an 8-4 lead.

Nick Kurtz homered in the sixth, and Soderstrom went deep again in the seventh. At that point, the A’s led 10-7.

Brewers keep coming

Milwaukee would not go away.

Andrew Vaughn tied it in the ninth with a two-run double. Then William Contreras hit a three-run homer in the 10th as the Brewers built a 14-10 lead.

Still, the A’s had one more burst. Langeliers singled home Henry Bolte, Kurtz hit his second homer of the night and Jonah Heim tied it with a pinch-hit homer.

Final turn

José Suarez kept Milwaukee quiet in the 11th, but the automatic runner changed the 12th. Yelich started at second, stole third and scored on Turang’s fielder’s choice.

The A’s moved Gelof to third in the bottom half after Williams’ sacrifice bunt. However, Langeliers struck out, Kurtz was intentionally walked and Jeff McNeil struck out to end it.

Numbers that mattered

Kurtz went 3-for-6 with two homers and three RBIs. Soderstrom went 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBIs. Langeliers added three hits, two RBIs and a homer.

The A’s finished with 16 hits and went 5-for-14 with runners in scoring position. Milwaukee had 18 hits and went 5-for-18.

Up next

The series continues Tuesday at Las Vegas Ballpark.

J.T. Ginn is scheduled to start for the A’s. Milwaukee is set to counter with left-hander Robert Gasser.
