UFC Hall of Famer B.J. Penn will move forward with multiple criminal cases stemming from a series of arrests in 2025 after a Hawaii judge ruled that he is mentally fit to stand trial.

According to court documents signed May 29 by Judge Peter Kubota, Penn was found competent to proceed following a court-ordered mental health evaluation. The ruling clears the way for the former UFC champion’s criminal cases to continue through the legal system. Penn is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 28 for further proceedings.

The ruling came after the court reviewed findings submitted by a court-appointed examiner. According to the order, neither prosecutors nor Penn’s legal counsel challenged the conclusions of the evaluation.

“The court, having reviewed the reports of defendant’s appointed examiner and noting that neither the state nor the defendant’s counsel contests the findings and contents of the report, finds by a preponderance of the evidence that defendant is fit to proceed,” the order stated.

The decision does not address Penn’s guilt or innocence regarding any of the charges but determines that he is capable of understanding and participating in the legal proceedings against him.

Series of Arrests in 2025

Penn has faced significant legal troubles throughout 2025. The UFC legend was arrested five times during the year following allegations involving disputes with family members. Including his mother, Lorraine Shin.

The initial arrests involved accusations of abuse of a family or household member. Additional arrests followed after authorities alleged Penn violated conditions related to a temporary restraining order that had been granted to his mother. The cases remain active and continue to move through Hawaii’s court system.
