Las Vegas Aces Overwhelmed by Phoenix Mercury in Season Opener, 99–66

Las Vegas forward Aja Wilson (22) walks the red carpet during the Las Vegas Aces championship parade

The 2026 WNBA season opened with a disappointing 99–66 loss for the Las Vegas Aces against the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday night. An evening intended to celebrate the Aces’ championship achievements instead saw Phoenix deliver a dominant basketball performance throughout the game.

The Mercury took early control and maintained momentum throughout the basketball game. Phoenix’s defensive pressure disrupted the Aces’ offense, forcing turnovers and limiting scoring chances. Las Vegas struggled to find consistency, while Phoenix capitalized on transition play and accurate perimeter shooting.

Veteran forward Alyssa Thomas led Phoenix with 20 points and was instrumental in directing the Mercury offense. Her pace and playmaking created challenges the Aces could not overcome.

Rookie guard Jovana Nogic delivered an impressive basketball debut in the WNBA, scoring 19 points in the first half. Her performance helped the Mercury build a commanding halftime lead and set the tone for the rest of the game.

The Aces struggled to generate consistent production from their core players. Star A’ja Wilson and the Las Vegas offense were limited by Phoenix’s aggressive defense, resulting in one of the franchise’s most lopsided home-opening defeats in recent basketball years.

For Phoenix, the victory signaled their intent to be a serious contender this season. The team demonstrated strong chemistry, disciplined execution, and defensive intensity throughout the game.

For Las Vegas, the loss highlighted the need to improve ball security, offensive efficiency, and defensive communication. Although it is only the first game, the Aces will aim to regroup and respond in upcoming basketball contests.

The final score reflected Phoenix’s dominance on both ends of the floor: Mercury 99, Aces 66.
