The Las Vegas Raiders are mourning the loss of one of their all-time great defenders. Former linebacker Rod Martin has passed away at the age of 72, the team announced Monday.
Martin’s journey to NFL stardom began at USC Trojans football before he was selected in the 12th round of the 1977 NFL Draft. What followed was one of the most remarkable rises in franchise history.
By his second season, Martin had earned a starting role and never looked back, anchoring the Raiders’ defense throughout a dominant era that spanned more than a decade.
Super Bowl Heroics
Martin’s name is forever etched in NFL history thanks to his legendary performance in Super Bowl XV. Facing the Philadelphia Eagles, Martin recorded three interceptions, setting a Super Bowl record that still stands today.
He wasn’t done.
In Super Bowl XVIII against Washington Redskins, Martin added a sack and a fumble recovery as the Raiders cruised to a 38-9 victory, securing his second championship ring.
Elite Recognition
Martin’s impact went far beyond the biggest stage.
- First-Team All-Pro (1984)
- Two-time Pro Bowl selection
- Key defensive leader from 1977–1988
His ability to make game-changing plays defined an era of Raiders football built on toughness, instinct, and swagger.
A Lasting Legacy
From a 12th-round pick to a Super Bowl record holder, Martin embodied the Raiders’ identity overlooked, relentless, and ultimately unforgettable. His contributions helped shape one of the most iconic periods in franchise history.
Today, the Raiders and the NFL world remember not just a champion, but a player who rose beyond expectations and delivered when it mattered most.
