O’Shaquie Foster successfully defended his WBC junior lightweight championship Saturday night, but it was what happened after the final bell that may have stolen the spotlight.
Following a hard-fought majority decision victory over Raymond Ford at the Fertitta Center in Houston, Texas, Foster immediately turned his attention toward one of boxing’s biggest names Shakur Stevenson.
The champion confronted Stevenson, who was seated ringside supporting Ford, leading to a tense faceoff inside the ring before security stepped in to separate the two fighters. The moment instantly created buzz about a potential future showdown between two of the sport’s most skilled boxers.
Foster Retains Title in Tactical Battle
Foster improved to 25-3 with 12 knockouts after earning a majority decision victory over Ford in a highly competitive championship contest.
Judge Chris Migliore scored the bout even at 114-114, while judges Javier Alvarez and Alan Krebs favored Foster by scores of 118-110 and 116-112, respectively.
Although the final scores reflected a comfortable victory for Foster on two cards, the fight itself was much closer. According to CompuBox statistics, Foster narrowly outlanded Ford 106-99 in a bout that featured constant adjustments and momentum swings.
Early Drama Nearly Changes Fight
The opening round nearly ended in disaster. Late in the first, Foster shoved Ford through the ropes and onto the arena floor after the challenger missed with a jab. Fortunately for Ford, he managed to brace his fall with his gloves and avoided serious injury.
Referee Jon Schorle issued Foster a stern warning but elected not to deduct a point. The incident added an early layer of tension to an already high-stakes championship fight.
Once the action settled, the fight evolved into a tactical battle between two highly skilled fighters. Ford enjoyed success early, landing sharp left hands and pressing the action, while Foster responded with precise counterpunching and superior distance management.
The second through sixth rounds featured constant shifts in momentum as neither fighter was able to establish a significant advantage. Both men displayed impressive defensive skills, making clean scoring opportunities difficult to find.
Championship Rounds Belong to Foster
The turning point came in the second half of the fight. Foster elevated his performance in the seventh and eighth rounds, becoming the aggressor and forcing Ford onto the ropes. The champion consistently landed the cleaner shots while limiting Ford’s offensive opportunities.
As the fight entered the championship rounds, Foster’s experience and composure began to shine through. Ford attempted to rally in the ninth and tenth rounds, landing several clean power shots and enjoying some success fighting at close range. However, Foster responded when it mattered most.
In the 11th round, Foster landed several sharp right hands that bloodied Ford’s nose and swung momentum firmly back in his favor. He carried that momentum into the final round, controlling distance and landing effective shots to both the head and body while preventing Ford from mounting a meaningful late surge.
Shakur Stevenson Confrontation Steals Headlines
Immediately after the scorecards were announced, Foster wasted little time calling out potential future opponents. The newly crowned champion made a beeline toward Shakur Stevenson, who was sitting ringside supporting his friend Ford.
The two fighters exchanged heated words face-to-face before security intervened. Later during his post-fight interview, Foster doubled down on his intentions, naming Stevenson and unified champion Emanuel Navarrete as the opponents he wants next.
