Dmitry Bivol made a successful return to the ring Saturday night, delivering a masterclass performance against Michael Eifert to retain his Ring, IBF, and WBA light heavyweight championships at UMMC Arena in Ekaterinburg, Russia.
Competing for the first time since defeating Artur Beterbiev in their historic rematch in February 2025, Bivol showed little rust following back surgery, cruising to a unanimous decision victory with identical scores of 120-107 on all three judges’ scorecards.
The victory improved Bivol’s record to 25-1 with 12 knockouts and reaffirmed his position as one of boxing’s elite pound-for-pound fighters.
After a cautious opening minute, Bivol wasted little time establishing control. Midway through the opening round, the former undisputed champion caught Eifert with a perfectly timed counter left hook that sent the German challenger tumbling to the canvas.
While Eifert beat the count and survived the round, the knockdown immediately put him behind against one of boxing’s most technically gifted fighters. From that point forward, Bivol dictated the pace, distance, and rhythm of the fight.
Bivol’s Boxing IQ On Full Display
Eifert entered the bout as the mandatory challenger for Bivol’s IBF title, but he struggled to find answers for the champion’s movement and precision.
Bivol consistently beat Eifert to the punch, landing crisp jabs and straight right hands whenever the challenger attempted to close the distance. Defensively, Bivol showcased the elite footwork and ring awareness that have become trademarks of his career.
As the rounds progressed, Eifert repeatedly found himself swinging at air while Bivol countered with clean, accurate combinations.
The Russian star increased his offensive output in the fifth round, snapping Eifert’s head back with sharp jabs and right hands that pierced his guard. Though Bivol remained measured throughout much of the middle rounds, he turned up the pressure late in the fight, appearing to hurt Eifert with body shots in the 11th before finishing strongly in the 12th. To Eifert’s credit, he survived until the final bell, but the outcome was never in doubt.
Return From Surgery Ends in Dominant Fashion
Saturday’s victory marked Bivol’s first appearance since his majority-decision win over Artur Beterbiev in February 2025, a victory that avenged the lone loss of his career and allowed him to claim the undisputed light heavyweight championship.
Following that bout, Bivol underwent back surgery and spent more than a year away from competition. Any questions regarding how he would look after the layoff were quickly answered. The 35-year-old displayed the same speed, timing, and defensive brilliance that have made him one of the sport’s most respected champions.
What’s Next: Benavidez or Beterbiev?
While Bivol successfully handled his mandatory obligation, attention immediately shifts to what could be the biggest fight of his career.
The most obvious option remains a trilogy fight with Artur Beterbiev. The two rivals have split their first two meetings, with Beterbiev winning a majority decision in October 2024 before Bivol evened the score in their rematch four months later.
A third fight would settle one of boxing’s greatest modern rivalries. However, another intriguing possibility continues to gain momentum. Unified cruiserweight and WBC light heavyweight champion David Benavidez has repeatedly expressed interest in facing either Bivol or Beterbiev.
Benavidez elevated his standing earlier this year when he stopped Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez in six rounds on May 2 to become a unified cruiserweight champion while maintaining his position atop the light heavyweight division.
The undefeated Phoenix native has publicly targeted a showdown during Mexican Independence Day weekend in Las Vegas, creating significant buzz around a potential clash with Bivol.
Still, recent developments suggest the path may be heading elsewhere. On Friday, the WBC named Benavidez the mandatory challenger for WBC cruiserweight champion Noel Mikaelian. While it remains unusual for a unified champion to be ordered into another sanctioning body’s title fight, the move could indicate that boxing’s power brokers expect Bivol and Beterbiev to complete their trilogy before Benavidez enters the picture.
Light Heavyweight Division Awaits Its Next Blockbuster
Whether it’s a third fight with Beterbiev or a long-awaited showdown with Benavidez, Bivol remains at the center of boxing’s deepest and most talent-rich division.
Saturday’s dominant performance against Eifert served as a reminder that despite the lengthy layoff, Bivol remains one of the most complete fighters in the sport.
And with several blockbuster opportunities on the horizon, the light heavyweight king may soon find himself involved in another defining chapter of his Hall of Fame career.
